Those new designer dog breeds

I remember a few years ago hearing about a cock-a-poo - which is a cocker spaniel poodle mix.
or how about an airdoodle - an airedale-poodle mix or a Bordoodle - a border collie and you guessed it poodle mix. Of course the ever popular labradoodle.
I wonder if it is the name poodle that lends it to such creativity
Now I heard a new one a bagel --- yes a bagel -- a basset hound-beagle mix. I wonder if you can get one with cream cheese?
So what do you think of these? Are they a fad or just an upscale way of saying mixed-breed.
You heard of any good ones? Seen any.
I have seen a labradoodle and it was cute.

I am just wondering what you can call when mixing Bulldog with Shih Tzu?
Isn't that nice BullShihtz?

I dont know but I would like there to be a deagle dauschund beagle mix, or derrier a dauchund terrier mix like my little boy dog. He is really super cute but could use alittl work on his temperament. There are alot of cute dog possibilites out there if you use your imagination.

I like derrier. That is cute. And a deagle.
Our dogs are deople - dogs who consider themselves to be people.

The idea of mixed breeding was designed to chase out the bad part of the full breed, some have common disorders that come with the breed. It works well and most of these breeds show all the good qualities of the mixes.
I have had an airdoodle (at that time it was an "oops"), he was one of the best dogs I have had. Even the vet could not decide to write his breed down as poodle or airdale. He had the airdale looks, but the poodle hair.
I now have what is called a designer dog; a chi-aps, very stubborn, but loving.

I think its a fancy way of saying a mixed breed. If they give the dog a fancy name like that, then they can charge more. I think they do that sometimes, so it makes people think they breed the dogs on purpose like that. I think its a cover up for some ooopps when dogs get together when you are not wanting them too. I think all puppies are cute and most dogs are good looking, even the funny looking ones.

I agree 100% I am a dog lover and most dogs and puppies are very cute. I think in our society it is also a way of people saying that my mine is made just for me.

Only one I can think of that you didn't mention is the Puggle, Pug/Beagle. I never knew putting a beagle and a basset together, you get a bagel. I have seen a bagel, wondering around my neighborhood, he's really cute and cocky. A dalmation got a hold of my Beagle, so her pups would have been called deagles, , or Balmations. I think it's just a fancy name for mix breeding. Some cases, these mix breeds are good for people that like dogs but are allergic to them. The Puggles are cute, I got to see one at the pet store.

I honestly prefer a pure breed, eventhough my 2nd dog is a straight up mutt, Lab/Aus. Sheperd. I wonder if that's a new designer breed, a Shab or a leperd, . I should of kept one of my beagle/dalmation pups, I could have gotten the deagle or a balmation thing started, . More people when there dogs unexpectly have pups, they can combine the names, maybe make a buck or two, or be able to give them away easier.

I have pure bred labs because they were free. If not I don't think I would have a dog. Can not really afford them. But I do love them.

You are right, I forgot puggles. I doubt that you can guarantee a mixed breed dog will have the qualities that you are breeding for.

I had a cockapoo once. She was adorable! I also had a border collie/English setter mix... would he be a Borter?
I think it's a new way of getting more money for the mixed breed dogs. Give anything a fancy name and you can charge more for it! People do pay for these things!!!
Personally, to me a cross-breed is still a cross-breed! I didn't pay for my cockapoo, she was given to me. My border collie/English setter mix was free as well! (Of course, there is no fancy name for that mix!)
They used to be called "mutts". I think they are the best kind of dog to have! I've owned several mutts in my life, and they were usually the easiest to care for and to train. Well, my cockapoo was retarded. LOL She couldn't learn anything! But my border collie/English setter was VERY intelligent and extremely healthy until he got older.
Yep, they're cute, but I still think it's a new way to make more money.

Oh yes, I agree 100%, a new way to make money. They are just mutts with an identity.

"They are just mutts with an identity." Hahaha! I like that! It's good for their egos as well!

What I understand, from someone who has a golden labradoodle is that with this breed you get the laid back temperament of a lab, and then the hair of a poodle, which I guess is less allergy producing. It is a cute mixed breed.

That is the way it is with some of the dogs, but the characteristics are not always the same. It depends on which is the dominant gene in that pup. I have seen the pup that you are talking about, it was cute but there were 2 pups in the litter that did not come close to resembling the other pups.

Most people around here just have mixed breeds. The mom is pure breed and the neighbors dog is the daddy. LOL I personally have an Eskimo Spitz and he is such a great dog and companion

Most dogs are wonderful companions if they are brought up that way. I would not have a dog at all if these were not free.
They are pure breed, I have seen their lines going back 15 or so generations, but neither is registered with the AKC

It's just a way to make a mutt and charge a high fee for them. It's a dog, it's not a purse, or a pair of shoes. There's no "DESIGNER" about them.
(and beagle/basset hound mixes have been popular for a long time)
I have 2 mutts. Nothing designer about them, and I got them at a shelter. So I got 2 dogs off the streets, without supporting an asinine breeding market.

Personally, I don't think designer shoes or purses are worth it either.
I think we have gotten carried away with 'designer' status. You can find wonderful dogs at shelters and through rescue agencies.

Although these designer pets are really cute, I think we are not really doing these animals any favor. The genetic changes undergone by these animals can be fatal to them. I read somewhere that many of these designer pets do not really live long and they constantly suffer from different kinds of illnesses during their lifetime. It is really sad to see your pet suffer... I don't have the heart to see my dog in pain.

I would like to see where you heard that or read that. It would seem to me that introducing a new bloodline would make for healthier dogs provided that the brook and stud were healthy.

I think it's stupid and breeding dogs is even stupider.

I hope this does not mean that you dislike dogs?
Well, it does help identify the dog somewhat -- giving it a name that is recognizable but breeding dogs unless you have a reason or a pro is stupid.

That is so true, to have a pedigree dog really does not mean much, I have had dogs that were AKC registered that did not meet the standards. I had a female Doberman, who was registered with papers that weighted in at 120 pounds, she was not overweight, but she was AKC registered.
Breeding should be left to the pros.

puggles are kinda popular. Part pug part beagle. This mixed designer breeds are costing so much money and yet they are not even recognized anywhere. It is just a way for people to get a lot of money selling a mutt by calling them designer breeds.

You got it exactly..by giving the breed a name they feel that it is a legitimate breed and therefore can get big bucks...and the worse thing is they are right. They get big bucks for selling mixed breed dogs.

The AKC doesn't recognize "designer dogs" as breeds. But people will still dish out lots and lots of money for these mixed-breed dogs. I say if you want a good mixed-breed dog, go down to your local shelter. There's tons of great mixed-breed dogs there!
I know around where I live puggles and yorkiepoos are pretty common.

I really think breeding dogs to be certain ways is wrong. Generally it does not cause problems, however their is the case of the pUg. They originally had slightly pushed in noses but people bred them until they had breathing problems because of it. They did the same thing as persians.
Look at hairless cats? WHat use is that to an animal?

Actually, breeding a dog for certain characteristics is a good thing when done properly.
The animals that you spoke of were bred for that trait and no one thought of the long term ramifications of that trait.

Well imagine breeding a breed of dog that is hardy and dedicated, low maintenance fur with exceptional sniffing ability...alas a great rescue dog.
That is a good thing to breed into a dog.

Could you then explain to me how breeding animals for certain traits is a good thing?
