Help?! =( What do you say to someone who is terminally ill and dying?

I have to go and see a family member of my someone close to me, who's dieing. He is terminally and has day's to live... I was asked to go for supported and of course agreed to help... But when I get there what am I supposed to say - "Oh hey! sorry about the news" I don't know =/... It's depressing and strange =( Please help?
