What would u do if your best friend is really downcast?

hi all, one of my best friend is really downcast at the moment because of his family financial problems, i've tried many times to encourage him, but it seems didn't encourage him at all, he still feel so depressed, and give up to the problem that his family struggle right now and didn't do anything. Everyday he just wait and almost didn't do anything, and became so pesimistic. I really want to help him to be more optimistic but i really don't know what to say anymore to him, i'm just trying to be around him as much as i can, so what shall i do next? what will u guys do if u in my position?
