cutting paint

sorry if i sound dumb, but what is meant by the term to 'cut' paint? i'm talking about painting interiors, such as walls, not anything artistic, though i imagine the term could still be used in more artistic usages of paints :)

The term I know is when you are painting walls. When they say you are "cutting in", you are painting the edge around a ceiling or a door or window. You should be using a small brush and I guess the way I see it is, you are blending that portion in with the rest of the wall. I don't know if that is the correct definition, but thats kind of a simple explanation. If anyone has a better explanation, I would like to know. That just by own definition.
