I had a german shephard a long time ago.He was a great dog.I raised him from a puppy. He was just about a month old when someone put him out on the street. I lived in Detroit at the time.We took him in and I named him Samson. He was a great pet.He passed away in 1977.I will never forget him.He was part of our family for a long time.I think samson is a good name for a dog that size.

I've always had a tendency to give my pets "people names" which can be unique, but sometimes confusing. I've had people think I had a kid because they heard me talking about my dog...
I would say to think of a few names you like and then see how your pet's personality plays out to help you pick out the final name.

We have a German Shephard/English Mastiff mix and her name is Precious. Now obviously if I were going to name her based on what breed of dog she was, I don't think Precious would have come to mind but she is very Precious and a sweet dog, so the name fits her. You don't have to name your dog, based on what breed of dog it is. You know the dog and know the dogs personality, if you give it a few more days, maybe something will come to mind and sound fitting for your dog. Good luck.

It's really funny that you suggested that name. It was the one my dog was given by the rescue group we adopted hime from. It didn't pass the "backdoor test" for us though (you know, if you feel too silly yelling it out the back door for the dog to come in), so we changed his name to Franklin after name of the county he was rescued from).

Our rescued German Shepherd came to us already named Bear. As a joke, one family member nick-named him "Num Nutts," because he had been newtered. Later this nickname was shortened to "Nummy." This began an ongoing family pastime of adding to his original name. Here is the string that makes up his entire name thus far:
Beary Manilow Jackson Otto Von Klunkenstein Barilyn Monroe Steffe (But you can just call me "Nummy."
Why am I telling you this? Because I thought that if by chance, you cannot decide on one name, you might enjoy naming him a string of names.
I am a German Shepherd lover and have been blessed to share my life with a number of them. Among their names have been:
Major, Sargeant, Corporal, Captain, Loopo and of course my current GS who's long name is listed above.
