what would you do in case of an earthquake?

It happened last thursday while I was in the office at the 10th floor of the office building at about 10 or so in the morning. We were busy with the usual morning when we felt the premises sway. It kept us still and breathless for a few seconds as we waited for the next hit. It did'nt happen. It was an earthquake of small magnitude but being at the 10th floor at that time, it left us the hollow feeling in our stomachs as we kept still. I remembered Sichuan, and the prediction of a July 18 quake in the Philippines (a hoax says news reports) that I can't help not think of the possibilities in case of a worse scenario. Would I be calm and not panic? would I go run under a heavy table? would I reach out for my cellphone and make calls? We have all seen the effects of a natural disaster, and can only pray that it never happen to us. What do you think you will do in case of such a scenario? I know I'd pray real hard.

I'm a Chinese from Sichuan,Chengdu . On May 12,I was having a class.Suddenly,I felt my head was dizzy and heard peal. I didn't know what happend, and just saw everyone ran away then I did it,too. After that,I just understood it was an earthquake. Later, there were alaways so many rumors around us,like"9'oclock there will be a large aftershock","Tomorrow will have a great earthquake above 7",and so on.Rumors made us scared .but when the time passed, the alleged aftershocks were all not happened,as time passed,no one belived it,and everyone felt better and did their own works little by little.

I lived in southern California for over 40 years and have experienced many earthquakes. Some minor and some really major ones like the Northridge quake. There is no way to stop it, so you just have to use common sense and make sure you are not under something that could fall on you, flex your knees and ride it like a surfer to keep your balance, get under a desk if at work or go outside if there are no power lines above you. A lot depends on your location at the time of the tremor. Most important of all is DON'T PANIC. More people have been injured in the resulting stampede of panicked crowds that from the quake itself. Most buildings are made to withstand the quakes now so the best thing to do at work is find cover quickly or stand in a doorway (a solid one, not a fake decorative one) and just wait it out.
