Do you lock the door in a public bathroom?

I loathe public restrooms! They're never clean enough. But one of my biggest pet peeves about them is that the locks are often busted. Makes me wonder who would do such a thing. I've heard that many times women's purses are stolen cause they casually drape it over the hook or lay it on the floor. I've heard that it's best to keep it on your shoulder. I am not sure about that. Either way, when I find that a public restroom does not have a lock, then I move onto the next stall and find one that will lock. Some things are private and should not be shared! Do you always lock the door in a public restroom?

I am from a small town so when I need to restroom I do not concern myself so much with the locks or with my belongings. Every one is nice here, if I see a person's hand go through the stall I will most assuredly move my purse or coat. I tend to try to make it known I am in that stall not so much by noise but the positioning of myself so that I can make it clear that there is someone occupying the stall. If I am in a bigger town I will lock the door and make sure that all belongings are secure. Have a Wonderful Day!

If it is a single person restroom, yes, I do! I am also very picky about what toilets that I would sit on. I am a driver, by profession, and try to hold off taking a dump until I can get to a cleaner bathroom. Unfortunately, there are some bathrooms that I would rather hold "it". I am shy and can not use the toilets where there are no walls between the stalls. What can I say, I like a little privacy at that time. I will use urinals without walls, but will try to go to the end, away from other people. If there is only one stall available, I will use it. I happen to have been given a fine piece of equipment, and chuckle to myself when other guys stare. I just hate those guys who don't know how to shake themselves and let the urine fly.

How about this, public restrooms without doors on the toilet! I've come across so many of these around California. And, they don't have toilet seats, sometimes, too. You just hope that no one is going to come in and see you. The problem is that they're always in an area where you are likely to spend a lot of time walking around or traveling like rest stops, parks, and beaches. There's usually no other alternative, either use those, or hold it. I can't hold it as I have some health issues, so I have to use them.

As soon as I go in a lady's restroom I lock the door. I also keep my purse on my shoulder. When I enter into one. I also cover my toliet seat with paper or a seat cover if there is one availible.

I hear you. That sounds awful. Yeah I have quite a few allergies myself which sucks like to bleach and some spices. It makes me sneeze really easy. I have had a few Urinary Tract Infections myself . Which I hate.

The hygiene factor is a big deal for me too! Especially since I've had UTI infections. They relate to the bladder but almost anything can make them flare up. I don't take any chances! Not since I was a kid. I had to be so careful about germs.

I hate public toilets too...even the clean ones....they might appear clean but who knows what's lurking in there. I try to avoid using a public toilet as far as possible. If the lock wasn't working, I would move to the next stall...but I've been to places where there's just one toilet and the lock is busted. In that case, I usually have my son or someone keep a watch or if alone, I hold the door closed while I try to finish my business in there. Last month we were visiting another city and I really wanted to go to the toilet real bad...and the only option in the place was a public toilet with 3 stalls and 4 open places as a urinal...and there was this long line for each stall...and the place was so dirty...the tap couldn't be closed and water was all over the place. And there were some people using the open urinals right beside me!! I couldn't stand there for more than a few minutes and came out and ended up peeing outside at an isolated place!

That is very sad. Usually traveling poses problems for women for this reason. Lack of secure sanitary bathroom facilities.

IF it locks. i've seen so many off kilter on the hinge,or just plain missing. i always lock it,and sometimes brace my hand on the door too so it won't pop open. the one place i worked at,i know why half were broken. people think it's funny to leave it locked and crawl under so no one can use it. then maintenance has to pop it open, and they never get back to fixing it unless you complain.

Our library bathroom stalls are always way too small. I have to take my daughter into the one on the end (which is always larger) cause I am not leaving her alone even for a second while I go to the bathroom. This is an unsafe world! I don't trust anyone with my kid!

Oh yea, I can't stand public restrooms either, they are so gross at times. Especially when I open a stall and the toilet isn't flushed! ewww... so I always look for another stall that's not gross like that! As for locked doors, I do the same, I have to have a locked door, I am a very private person, and it's bad enough that someone could easily see under or over those things if they were trying to! If all the locks are broken, which really isn't that common, I try to keep it pushed closed while doing what I have to do as quickly as possible. LOL But that is definitely last resorts. I mean, most the time I even lock the bathroom door in my own house! LOL

Me too! I'm a super private person. And you wouldn't think that talking to me online considering how much I share. But in real life, I'm way more introverted bordering on shy.

Honestly, I'd have to say that MyLot is the best thing that ever happened to me. I have learned so many wonderful ways to express myself both online and offline and I meet so many wonderful people with common interests. And I learn about places that I may never get to see in real life. In a way, MyLot is an extended family. Many of the people here would be inaccessible to me in my real life. They speak to me as if they have known me for years! It's just amazing!

I always lock the door. If their is not a lock on the door I will use a different stall. There is one gas station not too far from here that has had the same lock busted on one of their stalls for at least a year. I don't understand why they would not get it fixed.

I hate public washrooms too, but sometimes we don't have a choice but to use them. I always put a lot of toilet paper on the seat before I sit down on it, as I know there are a lot of filthy people and I don't want to catch anything nasty. I found a place, a casino, that has their toilet seats set up with some kind of machine that covers the seat with paper each time a person uses the washroom. You just hit a button on the toilet and the paper changes, before you sit on it. I like that kind of toilet and I think all public washrooms should have them. As far as locking the door, your right, most seem to have broken locks. I won't use one of those unless I have no choice, as in, it is the only washroom stall. But if I can I will wait for one with a lock.

I will try my best not to go to public restrooms if I can stand it. Its dirty and smelly and full of germs...yucks!!! but if I cant help it then I will go. If the lock is spoilt then i will look for the next toilet. If still spoilt, and I need to go to the toilet, I would place my arm very near the door so that no one an open it. Yeeeshhhh public restrooms are horrible

I always use the lock on a door in a public bathroom and like you if it does not have lock then I will find one that does, unless I am with a friend. If I am with a friend then we take it in turns to use the toilet, one holds the door closed with their foot from the outside while the other goes to the toilets. I have never heard of anyone being robbed in public toilets. The only place that I understand lockless toilets is in nightclubs, because people could get very drunk and then go in a toilet to be sick or something and lock the door and then pass out and no one will know / be able to get to them. It could be dangerous.

I always lock the door when I can. I too, have often wondered about the amount o bused locks in public restrooms. It's absoluely crazy, and I would loe to know how all hose locks got he way they are. I have had to pus my foot out infront of me in order to keep a door from being pushed open.

Hello beautyqueen26, All the times! I don't like public restroom too. If I can avoid it, I will definitely try to avoid. The place is far from clean and I can't stand the smell. If I do find a clean one, there are still some things that make me really uncomfortable using a public restroom. I just don't like it!

There had been times that I have been in public and the restroom didn't have a lock. The trick to that one is if you have a hook on the back of the door and your purse is heavy. Hang your purse on the hook. That will keep the door closed. That only works though if your the only person in the bathroom. Now if your in a bathroom and the traffic is a little busy then you have to find a one that has a lock on the door. I have been in a public bathroom and didn't find a door with a lock and someone pushed the door open. Not totally open cause I had my hand holding the door closed. All I could say was someone is in here, so they had to move to the next one.

This is a definite yes ! You never know who is going to be there to enter and do whatever. I definitely think people who maintain public restrooms should always make sure there are locks on every single door. I do the same thing you do. Check the door and lock it or use another cublicle if there's no lock on the one I'm in.

This thing is easy for us guys and we don't have to worry if our restrooms are locked or not. I have to agree with you that they're never clean enough. I guess it comes with it. It's like, it is abnormal to have a clean public restroom. As I've said, I don't actually care if my door is closed or not, but if the door is possible to be closed, I would close it. If not, I am careful and would press the flush first so that anyone who might pass along the cubicle will now that someone is in there and would not try to peep in. Wouldn't it be nice to have a law that prohibits public establishments from having a restroom cubicle without or with busted locks? Or we'll just have to wait from the management themselves? Have Fun!

If it has a lock I am using it. Kids and idiots kick and slam the doors just to try and bust them. The same way they write on the walls, break the mirrors, and everything else. I guess it makes them tough being able to vandalize an object when no one else can see them. Obviously they no it is wrong otherwise they would be calling other people in too show off how tough they really aren't.
