Ok, I didn't know what catagory to put this in. Sinc I have a question, I hope someone has an answer. LOL I'm disabled and often stuck at home. I live in the US and I'm on SSD. I'm reaching the point where I may need help with my home - I need some work done painting and I may need help with cleaning. I know there are probably "agencies" out there that help with this sort of thing, but I don't have a clue where to start looking. Anyone out there know where to start? Obviously being on SSD my income is severely limited. So I'm hoping someone has some input on places that do this as volunteers, or for a state funded fee or something.... Thanks for any ideas folks.

I know a lot of cities have a company called HATS that offers what you are looking for.

Hmmm I live in a really small town and doubt they have that. But thanks anyway. I'll just keep asking around. :) Thanks for the reply.

hi TessWhite in my town there are some agencies that help senior citizens with doing repairs on their homes when the senior is elderly or handicapped and cannot do these themselves. I would ask at your senior citizen center as they would know who to contact. good luck and God Bless.

Hello TessWhite, Have you got welfare people that will put ypu in the right direction? here in the U.K. we have homehelp to help disable people to come and clean and cook or look after you, an yes if something need doing to the house, they usually send someone round by doctors' order. So find out from the welfare. Tamarafireheart.

Yes we have social services. So far they haven't been all that helpful, but maybe they can at least refer me to someone who is. Thanks.

You may also want to contact the United Way. They could probably give you a referral to a business or organization that could help you. In my hometown, there is an agency which provides homemaker services (which would include the services you need) for disabled people. They are partially funded by the United Way. Hope this helps and good luck to you!

Hey Tess, Leslie here (Opal26). I am also on Public Assistance. I live in New York State. I am trying to get SSD. Not that easy to do here. Anyway, what state do you live in? I would really like to try to help you. If you would like to talk to me in private I would be more than happy to give you some help. It really depends on what state you live in. I know that there are organizations of people that do volunteer to help, but as I said I think it varies state to state. If you can give me a little more information I would be more than happy to do the research for you. That's what friends do... Your friend, Opal26

I've seen various barter/trade type groups where people will offer their services in exchange for something else...Like, I'll clean your house 2 hours a week in exchange for a dish of those delicious cookies. Or I'll paint your den in exchange for that set of end tables in your basement. It's usually completely random and some people will offer their help for nothing just to be nice. Since you have internet access you can just do a search for groups in your area and see what you can come up with.

I do have a neighbor who sometimes does that, but his health isn't much better than mine. LOL But that is a good idea, and believe me I have enough stuff here I don't need that I could trade. Thanks.

Do you have any friends or family that could help out and maybe pay them a little for their trouble? How about some kind of social services kind of agency, they might not be able to help you directly but might know of places to contact for such help. So instead of a visiting nurse kind of help they could provide a housecleaning or painting help--do you have Medicaid as it might fall under their program? Cause then I would imagine this kind of help would be free

Thanks Pye. The only family I have here is my stepdad. And he has emphazema and COPD so he doesn't do much better than me. LOL As for friends - believe it or not I have none. I moved to this town three years ago to care for my terminally ill mom. I spent the first two years caring for her so never met anyone really to become friends with. And this third year, well my health hasn't allowed me to get out alot really. I guess I do have one friend, but we only talk occasionally and she wouldn't be of any help I know since she is too busy. I don't qualify for Medicaid in this state unfortunately. I wish I did.

I don't know the name of any agencies but maybe you could see if there are any agencies that help senior citizens in your area because they may know where people with disabilities can get some help, too. Also, contact the Dept. of Social Services or the American Legion, Lions Club, Elks Club, VFW. Good luck.

Thanks. I did try Human Services - I didn't get very far there. They can help if I have dependent kids. LOL Thank goodness I don't still have kids to chase! But maybe they can refer me. I guess maybe I'll ask my oxygen company. They might have ideas too.

I oversee the needs of my senior, disabled Aunt. In addition to SSI, she receives Food Stamps and Renters Assistance in the amount of approximately 300 per year. Many states/counties have an in-home assistance program. The program, offers a qualified person the option of hiring an in-home helper or accepting an agency assistant. The program pays the assistant in an amount at or above minimum wage. Each program offers a set amount of hours each month (very generous in Orange County California). The assitant keeps track of hours and submits them to the county for reimbursement. Tasks performed include, but are not limted to, yard work, housework, errands, cooking, laundry, etc. There may be a variety of tasks that can be considered. I am sure each county is different.

Here in my county Social Services isn't being alot of help. Since I'm on SSDI, rather than SSI I'm very limited in what I can qualify for. Yes I get more income on it, but they don't consider the expenses either. But, they might be able to refer me to something that can help. Thanks.
