Maybe someone can give me some advice. I have a 3 year old pit bull. Last summer he started to develop skin allergies. It was nothing that required medical attention and I just put some hot spot on it and it was ok. When this summer rolled aound his itchiness came back with avengence. I took him to the vet and he gave him a shot a cortisone and a prescription of prendisone. This keeps the itching under control but also makes him pee in the house. The vet told me that skin allergies are very common with the breed and gets worse as they get older. Is there anyone else out there with this problem? How do you treat your dogs allergies?

I am going to safley assume he is a blue breed pit bull... If so you are not alone. My cousins dog has had the same problem and I have done research and it seems that there are many blue breed pit bull owners experiencing the same thing.
first i suggest you do a yahoo search on this and just fill yourself in on what others are saying. However, my cousin's dog was in such bad shape that the skin around her eye area was actually raw and you just saw flesh. They have her wear a t-shirt knotted so it prevents her from scratching her skin directly. They have tried every recommendation from every doctor, including putting her on an organic raw food diet, pills, shots, oils for the skin and in the beginning nothing had worked. Now over time, it has gotten better but during specifc period the dog suffers with bouts of this allergy problem. Unfortunatley they too have not found a specific cure for this problem, but a combination of the diet and the shots from the doctor have somewhat improved her condition.

LOL, I have to laugh becuase the other day I came home and he had scratched his front leg with his back leg until it bled and his left eye was exactly as you described, just raw flesh. I said to my husband he looks like a dog that was in some kind of fight, I am embarresed to take hime out missing hair and bleeding. I have put a cone around his neck to stop the eye itching, but I will try a t-shirt (he hates the cone).
Oddly enough he is not a blue breed, his name is Petey, because he is black and white and looks very much like the Little Rascals dog. Thanks for your response.
