Can anyone tell me exactly what a server is and what it does?

At work we're always having problems with our server. I consider myself pretty technically savvy but I honestly don't know what a server is and what it does. My neighbor runs some in the basement of his house. I have no idea why and what he uses them for.

A server is simply a computer that is used to store webpages and other internet content for access by other people on the internet. I've never actually built or worked with a server but they are gonna be similar to the computer you use. Probably the biggest difference is that a server most likely will have a hardrive with a great deal of capacity or several such harddrives since servers normally store a number of different sites and pages.

A server is a computer that a website is based on, or that webpages are stored on. Often a server will have Gigabytes of RAM, for websites that get a lot of traffic. Broadband is how much info you can distribute per second. A server services a website. A PC server can go up to around 8 terabytes of RAM and a lot of external hard drives, for big sites possibly around 1 Petibyte of hard disk space, like maybe myLot would need that much. It really depends, apple has released the laptop server. Often with apple the server os is different from a normal so for a normal person. Servers also allow you to access special parts of the websites too, also of you create them. Severs can be huge boxes or small, again depending on the size of the website(s). I hope this helps.

A server share a particular information. MyLot is basically on a server, all we do here goes in and out of myLot server. Your office server share your company data and internet connection, a one source of data repository and your gateway to the integer meaning all workstation request connection to the internet by your office server. This is why some offices cannot access a particular site because that office server limits it workstation access capabilities. Your neighbor's server at his basement is probably serving or sharing his personal data, media or serving a forum. We need servers so that all users attached to it sees only one data to maintain the integrity and security of information.

TO put it simply server is a computer which is connected to other computers and which stores the data for usage by other computers. Most of times they also act as a interface between a computer and other computer i.e. to connect a computer in US from India all the computers cannot be connected by LAN or any other means directly. So when a message is sent from India to US the server computer transfers the data to another server which in turn transfer to other and so on until it reaches the destination server.
