Okay, I came across this information and some of you may really change which one you use. I read this to my boyfriend and we eliminated Margarine from our house for good. Read on to find out why...
Butter vs. Margarine..........you decide
DO YOU KNOW the difference between margarine and butter?
Read on to the end...gets very interesting.
*Both have the same amount of calories
*Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams
*Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.
*Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.
*Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only because they are added!
*Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.
*Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years
And now, for Margarine:
***Very high in trans-fatty acids
***Triple risk of coronary heart disease
***Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is bad cholesterol)
***Lowers HDL cholesterol (the good cholesterol)
***Increases the risk of cancers up to five fold
***Lowers quality of breast milk
***Decreases immune response
***Decreases insulin response
And here are the most disturbing facts...
HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!!!
Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC......And margarine is initially BLACK, but it is DYED YELLOW to look like butter. These facts alone were enough to have me avoiding margarine for life. Margarine is Hydrogenated...this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure.
YOU can try this next little bit yourself...
Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area, within a couple days you will note a couple of things:
1. No flies, not even those pesky little fruit flies will go near it (this should tell you something.
2. It does not rot or smell differently.
3.Because it has no nutritional value, nothing will grow on it...even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not find a home to grow.
Why? Because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread it on your toast?
******Please, please, please let other people know about this...it is very disturbing and it isn't healthy******
Let me know what you guys think. As I said before, we got rid of all margarine in my house the minute we were done reading it and to this day we only buy butter.

Schulzie, I personally feel that butter is better. And I don't know how the FDA can allow this...however, it makes you wonder...how many other things are out there that we probably shouldn't be eating. Thanks for the response :D

Okay, this is old and many things have changed since then. Trust me -- one molecule can make a difference. For example Water is H20. Hydrogen Peroxide is H2O2. I drink water all of the time ..but not Hydrogen peroxide.
Also, margarine has changed, it has been reformulated to make it healthier.

Deb, that is very true...and I drink water all the time too. And I looked at that website you gave...
All I saw there was them saying that butter had a lot of fat not that margarine was better or healthier.
Still, the fact of margarine being BLACK and then DYED YELLOW kinda makes my stomach churn. So I think even still I'll stick with butter. To each his own, I guess :P
Thanks for the response :D

I knew all of that. We cut out margarine years ago because of the plastic thing. My husband told my Aunt and she can't eat it either now lol

I've been trying to tell my mom not to use margarine because of these facts. All she tells me is that they don't know what their talking about :P I think she needs to do some research of her own to actually believe it. Thanks for the response :D

I think it all depends on what study or research you look at, I don't listen to a lot of things about food these days as they keep changing their minds as I said research and studies change, one day something is good for you the next it isb't so I just don't listen because if you did, you wouldn't eat anything and you wouldn't even ever go to a restaurant because of what goes on there...

Lila, This was an email written in 2005 and after researching it it is still true to this day. Not only that but even if it said butter is bad for you, only eat margarine and still gave me the same facts...I would still stick with butter. Just knowing that margarine is almost plastic grossed me out enough :P But you are right, if we listened to everything that was good or bad then we would probably never eat at all :S Thanks for the response :D

Is that really true?
Since I have started baking, I've used a lot less margerine. But if this is true, I won't use margerine ever! Butter tastes better anyways.

Kat, It was an email that was written in 2005 but I did more research on it in the last week and all of it is still true. I just couldn't believe it because I had been using margarine for baking, cooking, etc. And now I won't even touch the stuff. Thanks for the post :D
