I recently read a mylotters post about a phobia of cheese. I am interested in reputable links from psychology, psychiatry, medical and upper-level education sites that discuss this particular phobia.

WOLFECHU: Yes, apparently it is an actual phobia. There are theories that phobias can have rational-based reasons, such as a traumatic experience in the past. There are also broader theories that explore the possibility that phobias might be some sort of subconcious warning mechanism that our brains/bodies send to us for protection purposes. Most believe that the phobia is a trasference of a deeply rooted fear onto an object that to the phobia sufferer is translated as "rational". But then...the word "rational," is highly subjective. (smile)
I am new to MyLot, so don't yet know how (or if it is even possible) to send a link to another post. However, if you are interested in reading the post on this topic, I found it at: Life/Unusual Phobias (See original discussion post about Unusual Phobias (Fear of cheese).

Well, indeed, most phobias do have some causative affect, as you say. I was just curious as to whether the people in question were just using the word a little loosely. My wife could be said to have a phobia of mushrooms, in that they cause her to have an allergic reaction. I wouldn't call that 'irrational', though ;)
I can sorta see it with cheese, even if it does you no harm. After all, you're talking rotten milk, which in itself is a glandular secretion squeezed out of a cow. It's not exactly something that's obvious to eat.
I shall definitely have a look for the thread :)
