Firewall is your guard from your incoming and outgoing transfer of your internet connection. If it is properly configured it will not allow anything to come in your PC and to go out of it without you knowing it. Antivirus cannot do this but there are others that it is bundled like total internet security. In plain language having no firewall is like your house has no walls.

Well you could easily explain it this way. When you are in the internet some could connect to your computer easily. But with firewall, it blocks it and asks first your permission for the connection to pass through. For example MSN and internet games need the connection and you may easily grant them access. But there is some nasty idiots out there who will do bad things if they get into your network. Thats why there is firewall which block those idiots coming without your permission. It is kinda like a door. Without firewall the door is open, but with firewall there is a ringbell and you are the owner who decides do i let him in. :)

My firewall sometimes stops me from opening or downloading a certain program or site. I find it hard to keep it so I have to delete my McAfee which is responsible for that firewall. I stick with AVG.
