How do you keep a cat from scratching furniture?

Hi, This is a real problem. Our cat really likes to scratch our furniture. She has a scratch box which she will use from time to time but it the furniture that she really loves. I am almost thinking that it is attention getting behavior. Now, I do not know how much more attention this cat could get. Any ideas?
