Do You Remember Drive-In Movie Theaters??

When I was a kid drive-in movie theaters were the best. My parents would take me to one that had a really neat playground in the back of the theater's concession stand. I would change into my pajamas when the movie started and watch while I lounged with my pillow and blanket in the back seat. We usually either brought a picnic dinner or ate hotdogs, soda and popcorn from the concession stand.
Years later, I actually got a job at that very same drive-in movie theater as a car hop. This was the person who took the money from the cars, made change and gave out tickets. I got to see all the movies for free too!
Did you have a drive-in movie theater where you lived or is there one now? They seem to be making a comeback now and I only wish we had one near us.

Oh yea drive in's were the greatest when I was younger. I would play on the playground but it was down in front of the screen. We actually have a drive in here where I live now and I know there was one where I was living up until 2 years ago. I think it's awesome. It is kind of nostalgic and gives people the chance to experience that.

It's only bad when its super hot outside. I live in the Valley and it is super hot and super humid so we don't go very often. They usually show 2 movies a night and it's cheap to get in so that's great.

Wow, drive in movies, yes. I remember just like you bringing your jammies and playing in the playground before the movie started.
The playground was in front of the screen. My parents would drive in checking the speakers to make sure the sound was working.
Later on, we moved and was living on the same block of the drive in. We could not see the film from our house but we could hear the sound.
When my brother was a teen, he got a job at the drive in, that allowed us to go in for free. By being teenagers we did not have a car, so we would walk in and sit in the outdoor patio. Boy, the mosquitos would bite and bite and bite.
We got all the popcorn we could eat free, and if we brought our own container we could fill up on soft drinks.
By liviing so close, we would see car full of people drive by, stop their car and maybe two or three people would get in the trunk, so they wouldn't have to pay.
I do not think I would have wanted to do that. What is the trunk door got stuck and you couldn't get out.
Great discussion, thanks for the memories.

We always knew when people came in with their trunk full of friends. There would be one person in the car and the back of the car would be so low to the ground. We would just ask them to pop the trunk and sure enough, out came more people. If they weren't caught at the cashier booth, they were caught in the field by one of the staff.

wachit14 hi oh do I we used to take mymom and sister withus'
and my brand new baby. we got to see the movie How The West Was Won and in tiny letters in the cooks section of credits was myown husbands name as a cook for the movie set in Phoenix. I gave birth to my son ,my first born while my hubby was cooking for
the film crew so when the film came out it was really thrilling to goto the drive in and munch popcorn and drink cokes while we watched that particular movie. We have moved since then but the drive ins here are all gone, and I think thats so sad. I loved going to them and we did not have to dress up at all.

They were the best drive in movies when I was a kid . I remember my dad would put down the back seat and me and my brother would have pilows and blankets all over . I remember the first movie I ever saw there was the jungle book .
They have only one now where I am from and it is around 50 mins away , but it the summer it is nice to go , because you get to see 2 movies in a row at a good price . I wish there were more , now that would be wicked cool

The drive-in was a great place! It was always so much fun to be at the drive-in while wearing our pjs.
We like getting fast food and taking it with us, sometimes packing a picnic. It's always so much fun.
We are so lucky to have a drive-in that's only 15 minutes away from where we live. Unfortunately, they have yet to play a kid friendly movie this summer. When they do though, we will definitely be there!
It's a shame that there aren't more of them. Someone should build new ones!

I have read the book too and have the movie on dvd I never get sick of watching it even now. I think there are a few drive-ins still left here in the Land Downunder.

I absolutely loved going to the drive-in movie theater when I was young! I remember seeing Gremlins at the drive-in as a child. It was a double feature and I fell asleep before the second movie came on.
I should look online to see if there are any open near where I live.

Oh yes, the drive in was the big thing when I was a kid. My mom would load me and several of my friends in the car and off we would go. They had a playground in front of the screen we would play on before the movies. Mom always brought popcorn and usually drinks in a cooler too. Every year they would shoot off the fireworks there and then they would show a double feature afterwards. Us kids could never stay awake that long, but we usually made it thru the first movie at least. Boy that brings back good memories. Thanks for starting this and reminding me.

There used to be one about 45 minutes away from where I currently live but it hasn't been there for quite some time now and boy am I disappointed. It used to be so much fun and such a different experience watching a movie and I wish that they would build them again near by. There is one I found but it is over 2 hours away and with gas prices now it wouldnt even be a consideration.

There's a drive in movie theater about 20 minutes from where I used to live in Iowa. I didn't realize it existed until transformers came out. A bunch of my guy friends wanted to see it at the drive in theater, and I went with them. It was actually really nice, it was middle of the summer so it was warm out, and we brought lawn chairs and blankets. The popcorn and everything else at the concession stand was REALLY expensive though...more expensive than a typical movie theater. Wonder how much it costs to keep one running compared to an indoor theater?

when I was little we had them in our city.. I remember being really little and going to see E.T.
we still have one but it's in another city about 45 minutes away and once in a while we do make the trip there to watch a movie, actually they play 2 movies in a row on each screen so we get to see 2 movies if we aren't too tired.
sometimes we bring our own food and sometimes we buy from the concession stand.
we always get the popcorn though.

Thanks for the stroll down memory lane!!!
I was introduced to Clint Eastwood via Dirty Harry and the drive-in!!! This was the old Timonium Drive-in, Timonium, Maryland. Now there is a Holiday Inn there, and has been there for about 25 years.
We did have the last one in our county, Harford County (still Maryland), called the Big M, but it did close a couple of years ago. We did get to take our oldest, who is 11, there once.
We do have the Benji's Drive-in, Chase, MD, that is still operating!!!
I remember falling asleep in my pj's and never seeing the end of the movie!!!
That is so cool that you got to be a car-hop!!!!

Oh yes, I remember drive-in movie theaters. Saw many a movie at 3 different ones.
The drive-in movies is where I saw my first James Bond movie. I fell in love with Sean Connery then.
On my 13th birthday, my mom, dad, sister, and I went to Merom Bluff in Merom, Indiana. We had a picnic lunch there and walked down the bluff and back up. Then we went down to Vincennes, Indiana. Across the river from there on the Illinois side, we went to a triple feature. I can't remember the name of that drive-in. The last movie we watched is the only one I can remember the title..."The Satan Bug".
The third drive-in movie theater is the Fairview. It's between Zook's Nook (Willow Hill Junction) and Newton, Illinois. It's about a twenty minute drive from here. I have been there several times, but for the life of me, I just cannot remember any of the movies I saw there.
One of these days, I'll have to make a special trip over to the Fairview to see a good ole action film.

I'm over 50, so sure I remember them. The swings were in the front under the screen at the one in my home town. There was always someone trying to swing high enough that their feet would show on the screen.
The back rows always were the "make out" rows for the new love birds.
Wow, and those speakers you put in your window were cool too!
My best memory was driving my Trans Am, just like the one in the movie "Smokey & the Bandit" to the drive in movie, to see that movie! Shucks, I thought I was so cool back then...
Vanity slips away as you get older, thank goodness!
