Most of our house is filled with educational baby toys, which when touched spell words,letters,colors..etc
Does these learning toys really play any role in thier development?
i once asked my kids pediatrician about this ...what she told me is one doesnt really need to buy these branded educational toys even the simple wooden blocks and the daily used kitchen bowls and plastic cups will teach them the sensory skills, shapes and colors.
At each stage of life they will automatically grasp what they have to learn like the motor skills(sitting, standing, walking, balancing),language skills(listening, speaking, understanding, hand signs),cognitive skills- remembering things, when they narrate like what happd yesterday... and the social skills...(interactions)
what do u think?

I don't educational toys are essential either. Because they will definitely learn one day. We do have lots of toys and my girls are touching any of them. They are now a days roaming around with a coloring book and crayons or with some plain paper and pencil, trying to write their names and the names of their friends in school :-)

Babies learn from their environment. It doesn't matter whether their toys carry an "educational" label or not; they are still going to learn something from the item-- that it is soft, that it tastes good, that it is fun to throw.

I grew up without those toys, when I was about 3 or 4 I got barbies and stuff, but never educational toys, my parents didn't even read to me and I developed as well as any other child. I don't think young babies really pay attention to the meaning behind the toys, they more so respond to parental mind stimulation, which is the most natural way of learning things.

I think that these toys are necessary because if you want your preschooler to get a head start on Kindergarten you might want to look into buying those educational toys that teach kids how to spell and learn their numbers.
Unless you want to do it the old school way by trying to sit them down and teach them the alphabet the old-school way, which I believe will make them want to carry their thoughts elsewhere. Kids can become restless so buy them some educational toys from some of their favorite television starts. eg. Elmo, Barney.
Kids would want to enjoy learning from toys that make them happy and teach them songs etc. I suggest that you might want to buy some of these toys if your child has a learning disabilty
