Hi.
using a good anti virus program and keeping it updated can fix the problem of virus up to a certain extent. If you can use Linux than install it and forget the word virus. Any external data storage media should be scanned properly before running it on your desired platform.

Viruses can infect your PC in many different way. You can acquire it when you open a file, when you open your email, when you insert a disc, and also when your PC isn't protected. One of the most common ways is through email. As much as possible, always access your email using internet explorer or mozilla. Try to avoid email clients such as outlook/outlook express. They have a good interface but it very vulnerable to viruses. Just be extra careful when opening files especially if they are programs.
There are a few antivirus softwares out there and you can use them to protect your PC. Some examples are Kaspersky Antivirus, AVG, Trend Micro Internet Security. It's always better to have protection. Take care.

There are several good anti-virus programs. I've found, over the years, it's best to have at least two, in case one misses something or is in some way compromised. They're often free of charge, but they're worth whatever they might cost. Sophos is the one I prefer, but Norton is a bit easier to use.
