When To Call The Doctor?

United States
July 15, 2008 10:37am CST
Okay I feel silly as I have had two kids and still this time around I find myself clueless. Right now I have been having what I am sure are fake contractions my tummy gets hard its a little uncomfortable but not to bad. Now I get them anytime im sitting or laying down so rest doesnt make them stop. When I am up and about my tummy is hard but im not having the fake contractions or if I am it just never stops but ive been getting cramps down there. They are bad enough to stop me. They arent to bad but they do hurt. My question is how normal is this? I am weird as I feel silly calling the doctor about any of these things but I dont want to not call if it could be important. So anyone that can help with some advise here?

Hi minnie, it's 15 already and maybe my guess is close! I remember you've mentioned the famous date is between 16 and 17! Anyway, I have friends who will always see their doctor when they will start feeling some pain! I guess that is the ideal thing to do rather than waiting...Maybe in an hour or day, she is ready to face the world..Take Care!

I was pregnant at one time about 8 years ago, If you are having cramping and or contractions you need to be seen by the doctor.. Something isn't right.. I don't want to scare you or anything like that but to be safe call them and explain to them what is going on, I am most certain they are going to make you come in and get checked.. When I was pregnant oh many years ago.. I was told by my doctor if anything is usually to call him ASAP no matter what or what time.. There should be no cramping at all during your pregnancy... Be seen by a doctor and don't wait..

Please don't take any chances when it comes to you and your babies health. Call the doctor right away and see if he/she wants to see you. I had 3 children and all 3 of my pregancies were different. Call the doctor now and when you can let us know what is going on.

I had a lot of problems with my fourth pregnancy but what I was told was this, that the more pregnancies you have the earlier and more intense the braxton hicks. I had them so bad at times that I was convinced this was it, I was in labour then it would go. The rest of the time my tummy would just go hard all day long, it would do it that much it made me sweat. I would also get the cramps too, I would have them really bad it was awful, my friend who was pregnant at the same time had all this too. Now you are not weird at all but if you are worried a phone call will not hurt, it will put your mind at rest. The last thing you need is to work yourself up it will just end up making things ten times worse. If in doubt, get checked out!

Glad to hear im not the only one that helps ease my worries a bit. Its funny how after having a few babies you can still worry like this. Like they say each pregnancy is different.

Since my wife is a labor and delivery nurse I've picked up a few things over the years. Being that this is your third nino you'll probably go fast. If your contractions are closer together while you are laying down then its getting closer to the time. You heart rate is slower laying down so if you're having contractions close together then try standing up or moving around. This will cause the baby to shift and it might slow them down. Your doctor is there for you, even if you have some false labor and have to spend a little more time in the hospital, its worth it.

I hate going to the hospital for nothing thats what im trying to avoid. Im lucky in that my hospital is close so if it does go fast I will be there fast. But I am gonna watch this closly. Soon im gonna sit and time it and see so I can tell the doc details if need be.

Go ahead and call. The nurse will know if you should talk to the Doctor. Every pregnancy is different, and it has been awhile since your last. It sounds like Braxton Hicks contractions, but I am neither a doctor or a nurse, and it has been 29 years since I had a baby. It is better to call and be safe.

By all means call the doctor. That is what they are there for. Don't worry about feeling silly. Something is happening this time that didn't happen before, so check it out! And try to stay off your feet as much as possible, prop your feet up. Keep us posted!

Hey Minnie! Seeing as you have already started to dilate and you still have a good two months to go I would get this checked out today! I think I was strange because my tummy never went hard...I had back pains and those were my contractions...never anything in the front! Anyway get checked out and then let us know how things are going as soon as you can! Take Care! ~Heavens~

Yeah, I didn't have that problem...the pains just started coming and then they would go and come back and this all started on the 28th when I threw up...My hubby came home from work early that day and we started timing the contractions...Went to the mall and walked around there and timed them all through the night and then I went in the next day to the hospital and he was born 9:05PM on the 29th. Anyhow, I'll say it again! PLEASE go to the doctor today and see what is going on because I feel this is not normal!!! HUGS ~Heavens~

Yeah im reading the card my doctor gave me and it says to call for back pain as well as labor may not be painful for everyone. Its just funny that I have this back pain but my tummy is not getting hard right now and all along ive been having the contractions but now they seem to have stopped. I think my body is confused a bit.

With your cramping you may want to check with you doctor, you may be dilating a bit and the doctor would need to be aware of that. Each pregnancy is totally different so you are not being silly at all. My daughter-in-law is due in September also and she is having real contractions already. She has been in hospital for a couple of night because of this and dilating so she is put on bed rest. You really should check with your doctor. They are used to the calls and that is what they are there for. Take care of yourself and your baby and God bless you!

15 Jul 08
Yeah we already know im dialating but the doctor doesnt seem to worried as its not even measurable yet but you are right if I get anymore cramping I will call. And take care of that little one you guys are waiting on. I hope shes able to hold out a bit longer but if she doesnt have faith the hospitals are good these days. My hubbys friend had theirs three months early and he is now a healthy 3 year old boy. They can work miracles.

Oh mamacathie I wish your daughter all the best and do hope that the baby is O.K. My cousin lost her twin boys because they were born just short of 22 weeks and she had already been on bed rest and in hospital for a couple weeks!!!! I really do hope that your Grand Baby is O.K and does not come out too soon! ~Heavens~

Yes she has lost 3 babies already so we want her to take care of herself and the baby. The doctor said the baby is 32 weeks old today and that he would have a good chance so we are praying that he holds on until at least August. God bless you!

My doctor always told me to call when in doubt, so that's what I did when I had contractions the 7th month with the youngest. I knew they weren't 'real' contractions, but I wasn't sure so I called. Don't feel silly it's your and your baby's health so you need to be assured everything is still ok. Have a nice day

You never know. Even after 10 kids, you won't know. Every pregnancy is different and every body reacts differently, so it's always better to see the doctor to be sure. He will tell you if the symptoms are 'real' or not and what you need to do. It's always better to be sure, than to feel insecure whole the time. Have a nice day

Even if you are not having any cramping right this minute you still need to let your doctor know what is happening, if it is premature labor then the earlier they address the situation the more likely it is to be able to stop it so i say yet again CALL YOUR DOCTOR! Do not make me come to Maine and take you myself-I will not be happy (even if it would give me a chance to see your Dad's flowers).

It sounds very much like Braxton-Hicks (false labor). Real labor is unmistakeable (so my ex-wives have told me).

I hate to disagree but with my youngest i flatly refused to call the doctor because the pains were not that bad and irregular. My husband had better sense and called which led to me going to the hospitial an hour later i was having an emergency c-section. And my cousin had a doctors appointment for a regular weely check the doctor told her he couldn't tell if she was dilated to go over to the hospitial -he beat her there-she was dialated 8cms. and less than an hour later she was the proud Mama to a beautiful little girl ( she tells her to this day that she was almost borned in the grocery store). So it is not always unmistakable, mostly but that's not an absoulate because all women are different.

You may be right. My second wife averaged about 30 minutes of labor. Our first child I delivered in a doctor's office (planned). The second I ended up delivering in the nurse's station behind admitting (after moving the Mr. Coffee off the examining table) - not planned. The third I delivered at home because we decided what the heck. She could pop them out all day like that.

How far along are you? I don't think your being silly at all. each pregnancy is different. I am pregnant with baby #4 right now and it's been so different this pregnancy. I never had contractions early before, well really I never even had contractions at all until I went to the hospital and they gave me meds to make me go into labor. with this pregnancy though, I started having pains at 5 months along, they went away but now at almost 7 months I have been having them again. My mom always says to lay down and put my feet up. sometimes that helps but with 3 other kids how can I possibly just lay down all the time! lol my pains are not bad at all, but if they were I'd definitely be calling my doctor up. who cares if it's nothing, if they are enough to stop you from whatever your doing, the safest thing would be to call. I wouldn't take advice from anyone other than my doc. (other then people who are telling you to call ur doc! lol) whether their braxton hicks or not, I'd still call to let them know, that way if they want you to come in you can and they can check everything out and you and the baby will be safe.. like they say, it's better to be safe than sorry. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy and with the birth! :)

Call the doctor and ask about it. I had similar cramps in my last trimester. My doctor told me to drink some water whenever I felt them and it helped. Dehydration can cause cramping. And I was told that even if I feel like I was drinking enough water to remember that my body is using up what I intake very differently than I am used to. It worked every time for me. Best wishes with this. But please still call your doctor and at least run it by the nurse.
