I met a really close friend of mine earlier this year, via Facebook. We chatted for a while like most new friends and soon realised how well we got on. Since then, we try to chat everyday, we have been there for each other through ups and downs, given each other advice, wound each other up, missed each other when we have been on our holidays, and in general are like best friends. Of course we have discussed the strangeness of how we have got so close when we haven't even met. If we cannot chat we will always leave offline messages for each other, and it is great.
I do wonder though what it would be like when we meet. We have talked about this too, (like typical best friends we chat about everything and anything) and would like to meet up next year, when finances allow. She is in Boston USA and I am in the UK, so its not like a quick trip. For some reason though our friendship has not been affected over the distance, and it is hard to remember that she is not just round the corner, but a 5 hours time difference away.
I have made other good friends online and we all chat regularly too, but nothing comes as close as our friendship.
Who else has had a similar experience and have you met up? What is everyone else opinions on it?
Looking forward to reading your comments :)

Isn't it really awesome when you meet someone online and realize that you could easily be best friends with them? I've got the same situation going on with someone I started chatting with online last September. Two months later I was feeling down because of a recent family loss, and without prompting or anything, my online friend gave me her cell phone number and told me to call her if I needed anything. I did, and she called back, and now if, for whatever reason, we can't chat online, we'll call. And man do we talk. @_@ I'll easily be on the phone with her for 3 hours or more. It's wonderful.
The cool thing is she's only a few hours' drive away, so at some point I want to go up and visit- likely when there's a convention up her way or something. It'd be fun.

Aww its nice that you live near each other. I'm sure if it wasnt going to be so expensive, being in different countires we would be calling each other too. I can relate to the family loss, as my friend was also there for me when I lost my mum a few months back and never tired of me getting upset. She was a pillar of strength for me and able to make me laugh when I was feeling really at my lowest. I also like to think I helped her when she recently lost her job. Hope you do get to meet each other in real life to and the friendship blossoms!:)

Well, not really near... when I say "a few hours" I mean at least a day's worth of driving. But yeah, it's close compared to a few online friends I've got. I probably won't be able to visit until sometime next year, but it'd be great if we could. She's always there, and I try to do the same for her.

That's awesome. I have tons of people online that I can relate better to than away from the computer. It's always nice to hear stuff like this. The internet really can bring the world closer together and I find peace in that. I hope everything goes well for you next year.

Thanks, I thought it was a nice story to share. :)
I have met alot of friends through Yahoo games, instant messaging, and more recently Facebook. The latter has been great for making new friends and I now chat regularly to people from all over the world. I need to get some serious travelling done once my son is a bit older so I can travel round to meet up with them face to face.

I have a best friend that i met online! Ive met up with her now, because i reguarly buy clothes from the shop that she works in! and its fantastic, I chat to her on the phone and we text each other if one of us is online but the other isnt, then we email each other, and reply instantly! Its really nice to have a friend on the internet! well i seem to think so! I love being able to log on and chat away about everything thats happened during the day! The only problem with internet chatting is that you cant really express emotions as well as you can in person :)

Good for you! Its great that you have met now and still get on. I think the internet has been a great thing for making new friends. I agree though that it is harder to express emotion online, but we somehow always manage to find a way, though we are lucky as we tend to know when the other one is feeling a bit down, or really excited about something, which helps, oh and of course using the emoticons when instant messaging :)
