In my personal opinion, one does not need to upgrade his computer as long as the computer still serves its purpose. In other words if you bought your computer for you to do word processing and simple excel spreadsheets, then by all means use it until you can. You will know that you need to upgrade if you require to use a higher version of Word or Excel that your computer can't run. Or if you need to run a CPU, Memory hungry application like Windows Vista. If you are a heavy gamer, then buy one which satisfy the requirements of the game you are playing, if it is heavy on graphics, get a good video card, it it requires virtual memory, a fast large capacity hard disk and so on... But no need to upgrade if it is not needed. It would be impractical and stupid to buy the most latest computer which is very expensive and just use 10 percent of its capacity.

Well I work in technology so I upgrade every 3 to 4 years and that is a long time. but If I was not working with in the computer / technology field, I would not upgrade unless my system is no longer capable of doing what I need it to do.

I'm using a 4 year old computer and I think this is scheduled for an upgrade. I don't buy a complete set, just upgrade the parts that need to be replaced. Recently the rapid development of component require upgrading in bundled like mobo + processor + memory. So I really have to decide when to replace it all together.
