Well, if you want to be technical, I think everything should be free. But of course, companies need to make money. It's true that Sony offers the PSN online system for free mainly as a draw for customers who find Live's pricing a deterrent. They feel that even though the service is free and it is costing them money, it will be made back in PS3 sales. A very wise decision on their part, I might add.
Live does offer a multitude of content for only $50 a year. $7.99 a month, if you choose to pay by the month, is hardly expensive. The online community rarely has any hitches. I don't mind paying for the service since it usually runs so smoothly. Remember, you are paying for the privilege to play online. Technically, Live IS free. With a Silver account that comes with every 360, you can send messages, chat, and shop the Marketplace. You are paying for extra privileges.
I don't mind paying. It's well worth the money. $80 for a year of Live, a headset, 400 MS points, and a Vision cam is a steal.
