one fine day siva, divi and myself went to buy a book for each of us which costs 10$
There we saw an offer of 5$ for any purchase above 29$
we purchased 3 books at the cost of 30$ and get back the discount 5$
we distributed 1$ among each of us and purchased a icecream for remaining 2$. As
each of us initially paid 10$ and got 1$ discount our net investment is 9$ per each
But at the end of the day we got a problem
our investment together = 3*9 - 27$
icecream = 1*2 - 2$
29$
where is the remainig ............... 1$

EASY TO UNDERSTAND ANSWER.
total money=10*3=$30
total spend =30-3= $27
$27 spend with $25 for books and $2 for ice cream.

OK....
3 books...$30
Each put in $10
Got $5 back. That makes $25 for the books.
Distributed $1 each.
Bought an ice cream for $2.
now that makes.........$25.00
plus $1 each.......... 3.00
and ice cream $2...... 2.00
Total................. $30.00 No remaining dollar.

I have had this same problem posed to me before but with a different story, it actually involved a bell oy in a hotel. Either way it all works out the same. The initial investment wa snot $9 each since the discount was good for a purchase over $29 and each of you put in $10 for the total amount of the 3 books at $30...
So...
$30 - $5 = $25 fo rthe total cost and then...
each of you took back $1 totaling $3, so... $5 - $3 = $2, and...
the icecream you purchased cost $2 and after spending the $2, you are left with,
$2 - $2 = $0
