I have 2 Beta fish in my store ( separate bowls) and almost all the people who come in tap on the glass to check to see if they are alive..so i have to tell them yes..they are alive but sleeping. Now why is it they think this? Don't they think I check and feed them? And Why would i keep dead fish in the bowl? So tell me..have you ever done this? or thought fish were dead and tapped on the glass Ode To P1ke..lol

No, I never tap on the glass to see if they are alive. I think that scares the fish so I don't do it. Also, I think that everything they hear is amplified due to being in the water so if you tap on the glass I would think that would scare them alot. So much so that it might cause them stress or give them a heart attack. If I were you I would put up a nice looking sign right next to the fish bowls that says "Please do not tap on the glass. Thank you." That way if and when they do bother your fish you can tell them to please observe your rules. People are ignorant and don't think - that is why they do things like that.

LOL--I don't know why this comes to mind...but reading this reminded me of something else. remember that scene in the first Harry Potter where they are all visiting the snake house and Dudley taps on the window at one snake...Harry says he's sleeping? Then Dudley moves away saying "He's boring"--then of course Harry starts talking to the snake and the snake understands him (parseltongue)--like I said haven't a clue why that popped up...but hey, next time someone does that to your fish maybe you should just remember and think of them as Dudleys...

LOL..Maybe i should post a note saying remember what happened to Dudley in HP?..wonder if it would help or cause more to wonder and then ask me more questions..gee i hate answering the same things over and over to everyone..if it wasn't sounding like i was a B$$$$ then i'd have a sign saying asking questions will cost you..LOL

I wouldn't do it because I don't think your supposed to tap on fish glass...I would want to kill someone else's fish. That would be bad. I don't understand people sometimes. Betas are cool to watch, they are mellow souls, well unless you put 2 in the same tank. :)

I got it, print out a big sign that says "Killer Fish Sleeping, Do not tap the glass, or lose your fingers! And No, not by the Killer Fish but by the Kitty!!" Or put up a shelf on the wall behind the cashier and put the bowls there so they can't reach. I dont know why them morons have to tap the glass when clearly there are signs warning them not to do it. I'd give anything, well, not anything, but almost anything, to stand at an aquarium store and watch someone tap a fish tank, then ALL fishes from all the tanks all around the store jump out to attack the tapper! LOL! That'd be a sight to see.

I don't know why people do that, it would really annoy me too if people did that. When fish die they usually float on their side the top of the water, and I don't think fish sleep like that. Then there are the people who just do it because they feel like tapping on a glass or disturbing an animal like it doesn't have a mind or feelings. Stupid people.

How big are these bowls, anyway? Hope you've got a filter or that you change the water really regularly...

Sleeping fish... he? Pretty unusual for fishes to sleep... Maybe that is why... Fishes usually sleep when it is all dark and quiet... In an aquarium anyway...

Hi Rosekitty, I keep fish myself and the last thing you should do is tap on the glass as this can affect and kill them so what I would do is printout a sign, yes they are alive and please do not tap on the glass sign to stop this and then there will still be the odd one who obviously can't read and will tap anyway. I always figure the store owner is too busy to take care of pets and he's in it for the money, anyway, so doesn't really care about the fish. But I don't tap on the glass because that scares the fish. I usually just talk to them or blow on the water.
