Just Who Do We Think We Are!? (A Rant)

Earlier this morning, I was looking through discussions. One about toilet paper caught my attention. I won't go into it but, one discussion led to another and another and, the last one I read got me so riled up, I had to let off a little steam.
The answers this poor person got were more disgusting than the subject itself.
I say they were disgusting because some of the people were just rude and disrespectful of anything that was not American. Something was said about the people being uncivilized and gross.
Now, don't get me wrong, I found the whole topic distasteful but, more disturbing to me was one poster's ignorance.
Why is it that as Americans we feel we are so much better than others? How is it we come to this conclusion?
How is it we figure we are more civilized and less barbaric than other countries? Look around at the crimes committed in the states. Rapes, murders, drinking just to get drunk then, going out and driving down the road without any regard for others on the road, intolerance of other cultures in our country.
I mean, really, where the heck do you think your families come from? And, yes, you and your family may have been here for more than a hundred years. Still, they had to have come from somewhere other than the US in the beginning.
It makes me very angry when I hear others complaining that people from other countries should learn to speak English. And, I do agree, if you are going to live in a country, you should learn the language but, are you going to learn it over night?
Give these new people a chance, give them time to learn something that is very difficult to learn. The English language, as we know it in the states, has been mangled to the point it is very difficult to learn.
The other thing is, we are the youngest nation in the world, as far as I know. What gives us the right to think that we know so much, are so much better or so much smarter than any other peoples in the world?
Look around you, people. Our country is made up of just about every other country in the world! Take the time to get to know your neighbors from other countries. Try learning something about their customs, their beliefs and their languages.
Judge them for who they are inside, not what you see on the outside. Show them that we are not uncivilized and barbaric.
Think about these things before you let fly some off the wall comment to someone. This does not make us look any better to the rest of the world.
Hope this makes some kind of sense to someone out there. I tend to ramble and not make much sense when I am angry.
Thanks for reading and I hope you have a beautiful day.....no matter who you are.*S*

Thank you! I haven't read the discussions you are talking about, but I have seen many other responses like the ones you're referring to. I don't know why some Americans think they are better than others. I can't stand when people do that, no matter where they are from.

Well, I just don't get it. People are always talking about world peace and this and that then, some idiot turns around and does or says something that is just uncalled for.
Thanks for your reply. Have a great day.

Hi thebohemianheart,
I had bumped to those topics that you are referring and it is sad to note really that some people are too shallow and close-minded..ANyway, I will say I am lucky so far since I am new here and not an American yet the people I made friends with are very open-minded..They are very professional and respectful..
I have friends all over the globe most are online but they are all good and very willing to learn from other culture!
These type of people who judge easily and who think they are above others might be very insecure and that will help them boost their morale!LOL!

Hi, checapricorn. It is nice to meet you. I am glad you have not had any bad experiences here. Hopefully you won't ever.
I find that most people on line are ok. They listen, they are friendly and helpful. You just get a few here and there on any site. It is just sad.
Where are you from, by the way?
Thanks for your response and have a wonderful day.

I am glad you started this discussion. I didn't read the one you are talking about but I have encountered lots of people with the same attitude. Its okay to have a pride in your own country but we should respect that other people have just as much reason to be proud of their own country. You are right. Our ancestors for the most part were not born here either. I think most people tend to forget that.

I don't know about you but, I enjoy getting to know people from around the world. It helps me better understand the culture, the language and the people themselves. How they live, how they work, etc. The world is an very interesting place, if we just give those people a chance to show it to us.
Thanks for your response and have a great day.

Two Thumbs uP!!! I really appreciate it when I read discussions like this. Racial discrimanation is truly rampant and it's good to know that people like you are there helping others to understand that this world is created for mankind regardless of race, language and culture. Again, thanks! and Im joining my hands with yours in advancing a call that the world is but one country and mankind its citizens because we are the fruit of one tree and the leaves of one branch...

Yes, thank you. We do need to join hands, so to speak and get rid of ignorance and prejudices. Ignorance IS curable.

I started not to respond to this discussion because you said it all and there's nothing I can add, but then I realized if no one acknowledges it, it might just sit idle, and that can't happen. This message NEEDS to get broadcast, and responding to it is the only way it will be carried forward.
Thank you for putting it so clearly!

I am glad you did respond, I appreciate it. The internet is the last place we should be that stupid. I mean, really, do we think that our country is the only one who uses it?
Thanks again for responding. Have a beautiful day.

How are we going to show them anything when our media feeds every detail of our lives to the whole world? Think on that for a second.
Then remember that many countries have turned against us because of the actions of our current president. Doesn't that make us look gullible or dumb for sitting back and watching him give us this label?
Crime is only going to go up as long as our economy stays at this level. When money gets tight, people argue, steal, kill and do awful things.
Now, do some research and find out who owns and controls what the media feeds the world. Learn that this is done to keep people from thinking about what is really going on behind our backs. There are few news agencies that report the "whole truth and nothing but the truth".
I agree with you, we aren't the ones to be telling any other Country how to live their lives. But, aren't they still, "coming to America"?

You have some good points, RhythmWalker(Love the name). And, yes, people are still coming to America for a better life. I am not saying anything against being American. I AM American! I know prejudices exist everywhere, not just in our country. And, how are we going to show them anything? We are fortunate enough to have the internet in common. A perfect opportunity to get to know people, values, customs, traditions and ways of life in other countries all over the world, isn't it?
I think my irritation came from prejudices in general. Not just Americans. We are all entitled to our opinions and beliefs, are we not? We all say that but, when someone disagrees with us, some of us tend to go off on the person and, say things that are just uncalled for. I just feel that when we are given such a great opportunity to get to know others, we should take it and learn from each other. So what if we don't agree, we don't have to be ugly in our responses to each other. Family and friends don't always agree with each other but, they love and respect each other.
Thanks for your response and have a beautiful day.

You hit the nail right on the head! I do a Guest Column for my local newspaper
and go to a forum discussion there every now and then. Many different topics
get brought up in there and a few people get MAD and say ugly things to you
if you don't agree with their way of seeing things.
I am an Independent Voter and think that too much prestige is put on the "party"and that will not solve the problems in America. So, you can bet that my stance gets me called names and the staunch Party members stay on my case all the time.
As adults, we need to agree to disagree and go on with life.
Wouldn't it be boring if we all were alike?
Oh, thanks for the compliment on my name.

*LOL* Ok, now that you put it that way, it really was kind of silly. But, it wasn't the toilet paper issue. It was just the fact that someone thought that the person was uncivilized because of her comment. It really irked me.
Anyway, thanks for the response and, have a great day.

Hi BohemeianHeart, I'm not really aware of the specific discussion but I am aware though of racial discrimination not only in mylot but in other forums as well. I have nothing against Americans as a whole, I don't really like stereotyping, I have American, Canadian, Australian and Indian friends and differences in culture, language and beliefs is indeed present. Yet, I don't see it hard to deal with them since I regard them as individuals with their individual personalities and not as a person from a specific country. Oh well, of course I can't expect everybody to be doing the same as well, we have differences.
I hope you're able to calm yourself now, it saddens me to see distressed mylotters because of other impolite and unkind ones... Good day and God bless.

I don't find it hard dealing with most people, maple kisses. Just the ones who think that if you are not born white and in America, you are less than human. People are people the world over and, we are each different. That is the interesting part of being on line, to me. And, I am American, so, I wasn't speaking of all Americans, just the closed minded ones.
Thanks for your response and have a great day.

well i am not from america. but i have to agree that what you say is quite true. some of the americans that i've come across really have an attitude. civilisation is not about national wealth or educational level. civilisation is about how we treat other people.
learning english is good, but i prefer queen's english. it's where english is from isn't it? well that's a personal preference as i just like the way the english sounds when they talk. it's really nice listening to them talk. cheers ;p

*G* I have to admit that I like to hear the English speak, as well. I also like listening to the Irish, the Welsh, the Scots, Chinese, Japanese, French, German.....I find it interesting to hear where the emphasis is placed in words that have more than on syllable. I find life in general rather interesting and educational.
Thanks for your response and, have a great day.

Thanks. I knew I was going to get attacked by some but, as the title states, it was a rant. I think it is great that some from other countries do actually post in English, or do their best to, anyway. How many of us who speak English actually try to learn enough of another language to communicate with others on line?
Have a great day.

the bohemian heart please do not speak for me I am not all americans I am just one american and I do not look down on other'
countries at all. I love to meet new people from all over the globe but I am not into american bashing, we do a lot of good things too, and I love my country and am glad I was born here. my forbears came from ireland, scotland and england to migrate here, so have a mixture of nationalties way back there. but i refuse to america bash as its too easy to see all the badthings about us and forget what has made us the land of the free and the home of the brave.as for people migrating here yes they should learn our language as we would do if we went to live in another country.

Hatley, thank you for your response. I am not saying this of all Americans, I AM an a American! It just seems to me that for a country that is made up of people from all over the world, we are the most prejudiced against people who were not born and raised here. Have a great day.*S*

Hello thebohemianheart,
I don't blame you for going off in a rant, yes people could be cruel and rude they should look at themselves in the mirror and It not really nice to be like that on the site as we are meant to be polite and civil to each other.I thank you for your rant it was very good and I had to agree with one hundred percent.

I think I am just tired of closed minded people. I tried to teach my kids not to see color in their classmates but, to see the person inside that skin. I think I did a pretty good job of that. I just wish others could find it in themselves to do the same.
Thank you and, have a great day.

i'm only responding to the issue of the answers the person received which were rude and disgusting.
i enjoy knowing and being friends with people who are NOT (what i call) pastel.
by that, i mean, people who are vibrant and colorful either in speaking or their uniqueness.
i belong to a global friendship & culture center, which is part of FriendsXcetra.
part of my friendship with the members is to remember their uniqueness.
because we honor our members, we would never tolerate these remarks and rudeness.
everyone can have something of value to contribute.
everyone should be given that opportunity to share.
share with me on your comfort level.
share with me on your language level.
thanks for sharing/ranting on this topic.
i do sincerely hope the member who received these awful comments
will remember that most of us at myLot are very unlike that person.

Thank you Mommasam. I certainly hope the same. A person's uniqueness is definately something I appreciate. This world is too full of "different" people not to appreciate the differences.

Well, Victor, if people want to believe themselves to be superior when they are ignorant and will not learn from others, I guess, who am I to stop them? I am proud of who I am, where I come from and, what I do. I try to treat all people with the same respect. They are after all human beings.
Thanks and, have a great day.

Hi bohemianheart..I agree with you though I live in the UK I don't see any reason why we should always think of others as less than ourselves we are all equal and have feelings and emotions and bleed the same colour blood..we all should be more tolerant of other people and be able to reach out to them and help them after all said and done though how many other people will listen to just a few voices saying this and could it ever make a difference...reason being those with closed minds to what we say would never agree-your friend littleowl

Thank you for responding, littleowl. I appreciate it.
I know that we are never going to completely wipe this kind of thing out because there are those who were raised this way. They raise their kids this way and it just doesn't stop. But, I will still continue to speak out against it. It is just not right and very unChristian.
Have a great day.

The people you refer to are ones who have travelled little, read little and know few, if any, people who have different backgrounds from their own. When they do finally face something or someone different, they act in keeping with their prejudices.
My father's side escaped the Potato Famine in the 1800's by coming to this country. I recognize that I come from immigrants-- even if my family stepped off the boat almost 200 years ago.

Thank you for responding to this.
I think we would all do well to stop once in a while and remember where we came from.
I do know that some people are just ignorant and can be made to see and understand the other side of the coin, so to speak. But, can we really cure stupidity when, in my opinion, this is something that people raise their kids with?
I don't know but, I will continue to speak out against this kind of behavior. The internet is a perfect place for that sort of thing.
Have a good day/
