Dead at 17

A friend of my Mom's grandson died this morning at the age of 17. He had a glass eye since he was a child and had recently got an infection. They took him to the doctor when he started getting headaches and he was given medication. This morning he woke up and said he just didn't feel right and he was acting very strange. He was dead by the time they got him to the hospital. The doctor's said the infection got into his brain and killed him. I just can't imagine the pain they are going through. My own son is 16 and I know it would kill me if something happened to him. They were doing what they could..taking him to the doctor for the infection and all..and he still died. It's so sad. Hug your children! You never know when something could happen.

They are hanging in there. What's really bad is that my Mom's friends' wife just lost her sister last week also. I can't imagine what she's feeling right now. It's a truly sad situation.

That is very nice of you. I'm sure they can use all the prayers they can get. It has to be so hard, especially since he is still with them in a sense because he's on life support right now until they harvest his organs.

they are so brave to allow his organs to be harvested. to think of that in their time of grief is commendable.

I am so sorry to hear about this tragic thing that has happened to the 17 year old. His family did the right thing in getting him some medication for his infected glass eye. They must have been worried to find out that he was not feeling well and see that he was acting so strange. It is so incredibly sad that the infection got into his brain and killed him. My older son is 13 and I just cannot imagine a situation like that. My 14 month son has been through two major operations in his life and I feel lucky that he is so well now. He still has Spina Bifida but otherwise he is developing skills quite well. Children are precious and no parent can imagine losing one of them so young. It must be shocking and I send my very best wishes to the 17 year olds family at this difficult time.

Oh my gosh, how sad. What a odd thing to happen and it happened so fast. You are so right, you just never do know when someone you love will go. I will keep this family in my thoughts and prayers. So sad.

This is a very trying time for everyone and we should all pray for that boy. At 17, which I remember, I, too, was the object of love and serious sickness and I saw how it affected my parents. Now that I'm 57 years old and over it all I can see the pain involved. My deepest sympathies to the family of that boy. I was just like him.

I'm sorry to hear that you had serious problems back then, but glad you made it through everything. I feel so bad for his parents. It's awful when your child is sick, and then to try and help and not be able to is really bad.

It's sad that it takes something like this for some people to see that they should always keep their loved ones close and let them know how they feel. Luckily that wasn't the case with this family. It was just a tragic event.

My condolences to your family friend. Sadly, most people do not understand that the eye is a direct conduit to the brain and these things can happen very rapidly. When I worked in the eye doctor's office, we often had to rush people to the hospital because they ahd put off seeing a doctor until the infection was almost unmanageable. Clearly, in your friend's case, they had seen the doctor and were being treated but these types of infections can literally go from nothing to deadly overnight. So sorry for their loss...

It's scary to think about things like this. That you are trying to help your child, and get them the medical care they need, and still the unthinkable happens. I know we can only do the best we can, but it's still sad.

OMG, that's so horrible and heartbreaking! I can't even imagine what that poor family is going through. Why did he have a glass eye to begin with? Was it an accident or something? My prayers go out to this boy's family. Annie

I am sorry to hear about the passing of this young person. That is awful. They will be in my prayers. It is always hard when a loved one passes, but even more when they are so young. I hope that the family can somehow find peace.

Me too. I know it's going to be hard for them. It's amazing how quickly someone can be taken. He was fine yesterday and then woke up this morning to this. So sad.

The poor child must have had real bad headaches for the infection to spread to his brain. My sympathies to the bereaved family. Its really sad when things happen to children. I know when my son feels unwell, I go all hyper. It is a scary feeling and I only feel better when he is ok. I can understand the pain the parents must be enduring on losing a child. All the philosopy in the world cannot put balm on the pain o f losing a child. My heart goes out to them in their hour of grief.

From what they told my Mom he was having really bad headaches and had been to the ER and his family doctor. I guess for some reason they didn't suspect it would go to his brain. I don't understand it myself.

There is something so unnatural and wrong about having to bury and mourn one's own child at any age. Too lose someone so suddenly and unexpectedly at age when they are about to start their own lives is doubly tragic. My heart goes out to this family and I suspect it wiil take some time to recover from such an unexpected loss.

It's always sad when you hear about someone dying, but when it's a child that's around the same age as your own it really hits home. Makes you understand just how short life is and that you should make the most of it.

That's truly tragic. I feel so awful for his family, and I'll definitely be thinking of them. I guess it's even more tragic because it all happened so fast and there was no true warning.

Yeah. They took him to the doctor. You wouldn't expect someone to die from an infection unless they were in the hospital. Then you'd know it was really serious. But with him home it was shocking.

I am so sorry to hear this, I feel for all the people who knew him especially his family. That is really sad. I have a son that will be 17 tomorrow. I don't even know what I would do, that is the worst thing that could happen to a parent. A friend of my son's got hit by a train about 6 months ago. He was 16.

I'm so sorry to hear about your son's friend. My son will be 17 in October and I can't imagine him no longer being here. It's truly a terrible thing they are going through.

That is so sad. I am in tears right now thinking about it. If something happened to my son I dont think I would want to live. They must really, really be sad. it's always awful when something happens to a young person with their entire life ahead of them. I feel so sad for the parents of those kids in Iraq who are killed just doing their job. We are all sad for her loss.

I know. I didn't sleep last night thinking about it. Just how sad they must be and what they are going through. And you really don't know how to help. There's nothing you can say that will make it better. I guess just being there is all anyone can do in a situation like this.

Hi,sunnflr.I'm sorry to hear the story.A child only 17 really shouldn't die.She is too young and haven't experienced the all of the colorful life.Every time when I hear a story like this,I will be very sad and lost in deeply thinking. Why couldn't we pay attention to them earlier and if we did so we could have saved their valuable lives.Parents always put their attention on business and ignore their children. In fact we really should treasure eevey second we get together with our children. As you say:"You never know when something could happen."

I don't know all the circumstances surrounding everything. I know they did take him to the doctor for the headaches and found out about the infection. I guess the doctors didn't know really how bad it was or they would have kept him in the hospital.
