The Wizard of Oz is a classic but quite frightening to little kids

This movie was played every year on TV when I was a child. Whenever it was scheduled to come on, the family would gather around the television and eat popcorn.
However, there are parts to this fairy tale that could come out of tales by the Brothers Grimm. They are more scarry than some of the horror films today. Take the scene with the monkies, it was horrific.
It was well made and well thought out and the special effects were ahead of their time.

When I was a child, I watched this every year. Even now that I am 52 I still love to watch this movie every year. My son bought me a copy a few Christmas's ago. Even my grandchildren know this is my favoriet movie and watch it wiht me. They love it. Yes some parts are a little spookey, but nowhere as scary as the movies they make now.

I remember watching it as a young child, and was never scared. But now as an adult I love scary movies. I guess I can see how some children would be frightened by the movie.

I think that this movie--a favorite of mine--had some scary parts in it, but it's still a movie I'd have no problem letting a child of mine (if I had any kids) watch.
Scary parts or not, it wasn't the same kind of scary as we see in so many of today's movies. That is, it isn't a "dark" movie.
I found the nasty neighbor lady who was trying to take away Dorothy's little dog to be scarier than the wicked witch. The wicked witch was comical and cartoonish, while the neighbor lady was a realistic person who could do something evil like force a little girl to give up her beloved pet with the pet ending up getting put down.
Good for Toto having the doggie smarts to get out of that old witch's basket and head back home!
