How is soap made?

I always wondered, how is it made? And if you have any links to websites where they tell you how to make soap at home, I would appreciate the link. Thanks.

My parents make soap at home, but I was never really interested in the process. It involves mainly animal fat and caustic soda (sodium hydroxide). They boil it somehow and the soap floats on some very corrosive liquid they sometime use to clean metal pots. Maybe you can learn more about soap making here: http://www.teachsoap.com/

My teacher said we could make it using coconut oil and hydroxide (i forgot which kind of hydroxide). But anyway we'll make it few weeks from now in my organic chem lab :D
