I just saw a commercial on TV for BK - and it was talking about Apple fries and the first thing I thought was take a healthy food and make it unhealthy but alas they are vindicated.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20740405/
BK is planning to serve Apples cut to resemble french fries in a french fry like box.
They will also offer a kids meal with flame-broiled chicken tenders, unsweetened organic applesauce and lowfat milk.
I think this is great.
I want to know why it is being marketed to kids under 12, I think us older kids would enjoy this too and we would certainly feel better about eating at fast food.
What about you, would order this for yourself if you went to BK? What other suggestions would you have for fast food places to make the food healthier? Would this get you into a BK?

Wonderful innovations! That's great and I really will patronize that! As you said not only for kids but for adults as well for in the first place adults deserve healthy foods too.
Well for other fas-food places, I suggest they use unsaturated fats for their friend stuff if not they should rather roast that fry. I hope they also add more veggie recipes in their menu and serve fresh fruit juices instead of soft drinks.

Yes, I plan on going there. No fats vs unsaturated fat is a much healthier option. roasting or broiling is better too.
Maybe they can start sneaking more fruits and veggies in. I would like to see fruit smoothies with no added fats or sugars.

My family hardly ever eats out any more. I try to make meals at home. This way I know that we are eating well balanced and portioned meals. Eating out for us, is not only expensive for what you get, but also unhealthy. I am glad to know though that certain fast food places are taking into account that society would like better choices. The number of obese people is on the rise, because a lot of people want food fast and now. Not looking at the nutrition value.

Oh I agree, eating at home is healthier, more nutritious and less costly then eating out. But I must admit, being I am in a house without AC, when the temperature hits 90 outside, I just do not want to cook or even think about using the stove.
I go out.

I have decided to stop eating at Burger King since they have come out with the fried apple. I am so disgusted with the commercial for them. The King come home and gives a little girl a package of the apple fries then the shot goes to a little boy king. The Daddy king gives the little boy king his package of apple fries and the little boys kicks the daddy king in the shin. What does that teach little kids?

Well, I must agree it is an awful commercial. Personally they should go with a cartoon king not that plastic caricature.
I must say those, the apples are NOT fried, they served fresh, they are called fries because they are in the shape of fries.

I try to stay away from fast food in general.I don't think any of it is healthy. When they say fat free, low calorie or anything like that, I worry. I worrry a lot.

I used to work in a produce dept. You would be amazed what chemicals those fruits are sprayed with. If they were washed.. really washed, they would be healthy. Also the meats today are given hormone shots so they will grow quicker. It is for that reason that we purchase a beef from my brother. We know what it was fed. Just my opinion but I dont trust the food industry anymore.

Well I think and apple and flame grilled chicken should meet the healthy criteria. So should low fat milk and juice. Their other food - I don't think so.

Fast food is the bane of our existence.
I think healthy food options should be marketed to everyone! However, childhood obesity is a BIG problem in the US. Obesity in general, is, but when you are that fat as a young person, your body doens't develope properly, causing MORE issues down the road. So, while they should be encouraging good eating habits for everyone, I understand why they are targeting children. This country needs to learn how to eat healthy food again, and we aren't going to learn it from a FAST FOOD restaurant!!

I don't know, kids seem to love what they eat at fast food and if we can teach them to eat flame broiled chicken, fresh fruit and low fat milk, I would say that fast food can be a place to begin learning to eat healthy.

I think this is a great idea =) I already liked the apple slices at Subway and McDonalds. I would probably order this for myself because I am not a big fast food eater. Now and then when I crave it but if I'm out and need to feed my daughter, I want something that sounds good to me, not just to eat crap because that's all that's avail in a drive-thru situation.

The Apple fries sound like a great driving snack. The portability of french fries without the calories or fat. That is a deal.
So many people with kids use fast food, this is a great idea and a great way to get kids on to a healthier path. Fries are fine as a once in a while thing, but apples are an everyday thing.

it is really a nice step they are taking. I guess all these food joints should practice taking good measure to market healthy food. in my country many food joints have already switched to healthier portions. yes, we adults will be happy to have them as well.

It is not a nice step, it is a necessary step. You are right, portions size were out of control and we must start to get a more realistic take on portion size and portion control
For example, we out out for lunch today, I ordered a burger - it came with onion rings. I was stuffed, 8 hours later I started being hungry again. This was not supersize, it was a regular portion.
I can't order from the kids menu.

OH the apple fries.... my kids loved that when they were kids and still asked me for their apples cut that way sometimes. It was a nice and easy way to get them to eat fruit.
I think that they should not stop at kids under 12. Having the choice would be something even grown ups would enjoy. I certainly would prefer broiled chicken to those fried pieces they have. ANd although the apple juice or the lowfat milk wouldn't do anything for me since I always drink water, I can see where people might choose it.
However, I don't know if those things would get me into a BK. I think that ever since I came here I ate there maybe twice or three times. I don't like it too much. But then again I don't like MacDonald's either. If at all, I sometimes go to Harveys.
As for the apple fries.. I don't know, they would have to put something on the apple so it wouldn't change color since apples get dark if open and exposed to air. All in all I think I would prefer to eat my apple fries at home :)

My guess is that the apples will be prepackaged and opened right at serving time. I also agree on the chicken, it does seem though, when they offer that option it is just that a piece of chicken, so spices, no marinates, the minimum they can do, here you go - a piece of chicken on your white bread roll with iceberg lettuce and a slice of tomato,
When I do chicken at home it is Mrs. Dashed and marinated and spiced and BBQ sauced, so many things to enhance the flavor.
I never thought of doing apple fries, you must be very creative.

One has to be really creative when kids don't want to eat the healthy stuff, and sometimes not even the unhealthy food :)
They used to eat well, but every once in a while they used to go trough phases when they had no appetite at all.
Apple fries, hearts and other pictures on the pancakes, whole wheat bread "fries" with cinnamon, cucumber flowers, carrot toothpicks... the whole lot heheheheheeeeeeeee

This is a good news. I myself is a fan of these fast food hype nowadays. If I have no time to cook, I basically would go to fast food and order food there. This would be a pleasant offer to consumers like me since healthy food becomes more accessible to us via Burger King's new system.

I agree, it is a good thing for them to offer us some healthy food options. When my son was young, cooking time was scarce, Between school and work there was so little time to cook that we often ate out. I wish the options were healthier back then.

I think it is a fantastic idea. It's about time the fast-food chains begin addressing a problem they are directly responsible for, which is making our children obese. All that supersizing and deep fried food has made our kids overweight, suffering from diabetes and high cholesterol.
The fact that BK has to market the apples to look like french fries is a little disturbing, but if it gets kids to eat fruit, then good for them. I would like to see these options offered to everyone though. I'm on Weight Watchers and I would rather eat the healthy version, than the high-fat one.

Me sentiments exactly. I would rather eat healthy and it is too bad they have to make the apples look like fries but it is astep in the right direction. And for all the people that disagree, these fast food places market to kids, and they have been marketing unhealthy stuff. The Hamburglar. Now they have to start marketing these new healthy options to kids.
I am not sure how but they have the marketing people who can pull it off.
Maybe have an apple fries give away. But stickers on the packaging and some of them win prizes. A toy, a carton of milk, more apple fries!

Nope I would not have this at a fast food place. Do not get me wrong I am all for healthy eating and my family eats as healthily as I can afford and they eat the healthy things they like. But when I go out for a fast food meal it is a treat and so I do not want to be eating apple sticks or broiled chicken!

It is fast food, people should understand that by its' nature it is not meant to be healthy. it is highly processed "food" that is massed produced cheaply. While it tastes good, anyone who thinks that eating fast food is a good choice in concerns to health is just wrong.
@Debs_place (10520)

I don't think so, I think fast food can be healthy, at the time that someone conceived the idea of fast food, it was unhealthy and no one cared. Servings were smaller and cholesterol was a word that no one heard of. Now, there is no reason why a burger can not be low-fat turkey and fries can not be fresh apples instead of french fries. And instead of ice cream, we get low fat-low sugar yogurt with fruit. Mayo can be low-fat, and spices can be used on the burgers to give them taste instead of special sauce. Yes, the companies will have to think a little and be more creative, but it can be done.
It can be done, but the american public must be willing to buy into it!

Agree, they have to market to adults. Let them see that they can eat fast food and still eat healthy. i like to eat salads, they are great but they take too long. They aren't fast food.
I hope this trend continues.

Hi!
That's great news. With everyone being so health conscious I guess it will have a good welcome.Parents are so worried for their children as most of them are hooked to these fast foods. It should not be for just the kids it should be made in general as most of the adults too enjoy eating at these fast food joints.Like Bk i hope all the other companies too follow suit.

I just came from the BK Site and the apple fries come with a caramel dipping sauce, which means more sugar. I know that it tastes good, but I would stay away from it. Teach the kids to eat fruit without a candy topping.
And yes, they need to head more in the adult direction for healthy foods. I wonder when they will figure it out, maybe when the adults start ordering the kids meals for themselves.
I also hope they don't increase the price to be healthy.
A few years ago I think it was McD's had a plain chicken sandwich and I do mean plain - lettuce and tomato on a bun - no spices, no nothing. Didn't they ever hear of Mrs Dash.

I think it would be great to start selling healthier food at these fast food places...I think like the chicken places should offer baked chicken but all they have is fried..The apples cut like fries and the new things at burger king sounds like a winner...i have started going to sub way more for andwiches because they offer fat free and healthy sandwiches there....In this day and age we need to eat heathier and leave off all that fat...

I agree, I thin BK may have a winner here. We used to do subway a lot when we ate out more. Their lower fat options were good and you could get a pile of veggies on those sandwiches so it was a double good hit.

This is a positive develpment, I think. Corporate America only responds to the bottom line and I think they may have come across "healthy" as a good way to generate more profits. It's too bad some really unhealthy foods cannot be regulated but the consumers speak and the suits have to listen. Cheers!!

And it could be a good thing for us older kids health as well. I think with the apple fries, I would get 2 of them instead of a fries and it would still be healthier then even a small fry.
