Ever have one of those moments when you're trying to do something on the internet? I did just today.
I feel like I am very knowledgeable when it comes to the internet. Putting up HTML codes and whatnot. I feel exceptionally knowledgeable not just because of what I know, but knowing it without having taken any type of class whatsoever. Everything I know is from research, trial and error. But today has me feeling computer illiterate.
I have been trying to get my banner for my online business to work ever since last week when I found out that the code was messed up somehow. The url would come up with Mylot in front, then my url. I have copied and pasted codes from several different sites, and it all came up the same way. I was very frustrated. How will I ever get people from MyLot to my site if the banner won't work.
Today, I found the problem. Very simple actually. I just forgot to put the "http://" in front of the target url. Boy don't I feel sheepish. All this knowledge and I couldn't figure out for a week what was wrong with the code.
I know I'm not the only one that has done this. How many of you have been trying to get something online, have gotten frustrated because it wouldn't work right. Only to find out it was something simple you did or didn't do that caused the problem? Don't be shy, we all make mistakes. Put it on out here!!!

HTML is the language that you speak to the computer basically. You see how this page is put up, the HTML code is what you write to make it look this way, to put it in laymen's terms. Don't be impressed by what I can do, I still can't put up an entire page for real, not and have it look the way I want it to. And today I just found out how to put a simple banner in the HTML box of the profile, well, relearned lol.

Web developers do not write the actual code to their websites, they use Integrated Development Environments (IDEs) that you can graphically manipulate your banner and it will write the code behind it for you. It is much, much, much faster and way easier. A simple program like this to try out would be something like Macromedia Dreamweaver or some other free less featured program like the one that comes with the Netscape package (or used to).

It'll usually always SEEM simple and obvious once you have the problem licked, but until you do you're checking out every possibility! I never really got into HTML coding as I haven't gotten around to any site building so far-I've just used templates and such..My first Computer was a Commodore 64,and dedicated magazines had programs (In Commodore BASIC!) that you could type in and use..but of course, typos crept in and the program wouldn't work..It was a great feeling to finally debug a program and see understandable data coming out on the result screen!

Yes! I was so happy when I got the darn thing to work the way it was supposed to, but at the same time I was mad because I should have thought about that a week ago. I was looking at my other banners, and saw that they were working right. I was like what the f*k am I doing wrong not to get this one banner to work? Sometimes the fingers work faster than the brain I guess, but I usually catch things like that, because when you touch type you can actually feel your fingers touch the wrong button right after you've done it, you know?

Yeah, that seems like a good excuse. Lawd knows that I was beating my head against the screen for a week trying to figure out why the link wasn't working. All because of a simple few letters that I forgot to put in when I copied and pasted the url. After the fact you laugh about it, but while its happening you feel so dumb!!!

I have been there, done that. And I have an easy answer. I go back to my teacher. My hubby started teaching me about code and how to use a computer before we were even dating. If I get stuck, I just ask him. I know a bit lazy, but alot less frustrating.

That has happened to me so many times when I work with html. It just seems that I forget the little details. Most of the time I will go back to some other site I have done the same kind of code on and copy and paste it, then make changes to fit the new site. Still some of the details get messed up and I feel like I should know what is wrong. Then when I finally find it I feel like you do....well duh!!!
I haven't done a lot of html in the last few years. Just a little now and then. And that makes it even worse because I have forgotten so much. I am glad I have my notebook with the basic codes listed. Couldn't do a thing without that. Like you, I have pretty much taught myself all the computer things I can do. Nothing like a computer crash to help you learn, either! Especially if you have some good computer geek friends online who can talk (or chat) you through the different things you have to do to get up and running right again. But about the time I get things figured out, microsoft comes out with a new windows version and there I am trying to find things that used to be so easy to find.

Sounds like you just had one of those days... I know things like that have happened to me as well; I just can't really remember them off the top of my head. I suppose I blocked the memories out because they were so horrible!
Oh, I DO have one... when I was learning how to type the emoticons from this site in to my discussion posts. I liked the "Thumbs Up" emoticon, but for a while I was putting the code in wrong! I put in "thumbsup" between the em brackets, instead of "thumbup". I felt so silly when I realized that! I can do it now, though... I think.
