Page rank & position in search engines

I am wondering why does some website have a higher page rank than others even when they have similar contents. Furthermore, what makes a website listed out first on search engines. Are these due to the content? The frequency of the keyword used? The number of hits we get? Or is it something else? I want to try and get my website listed in the first page of search engines and have a high page rank.
