Which Colour To Choose Maroon Or Green? Carpet Decision - Your Advice Please

If I tell you the colouring of everything else in the room will you please give me your own personal opinion as to which one you would choose for carpet and why? I need to decide by 11am Monday morning which one I am going to go for.
Right it is for the landing stairs and lounge together at present I have a very pale hint a tint of green on the walls with lots of green pot plants, I have light wood furniture and two double maroon leather sofas, the curatains are maroon with slated blinds in off white behind. The pictures on the walls are in pale pastel colours with different shades of green within them so would having a marron carpet make the room look too dark, it is a very large room or would the green carpet bring out the green more in the walls and the plants and compliment. I usually go for a natural colour carpet but fin they get stained too quickly especially with a little one in the house. Which colour would you choose based on the info I have given you from the two or would you choose something different entirely.

Hey ellie,
First I want to thank you for all your help that you've been
giving me. You really are a true Mylot friend! Now let me
see if I can return the favor. You gave a great visual of
your home decorations. Ready for my opinion-I think that you
should go maroon and I will tell you why. I used to have
chocolate brown carpet and my stepfather convinced me to
get light beige carpet. Needless to say it was the worst
mistake ever! I knew it was wrong, but him and Mom were buying
it as a gift so I kinda had no say. In your case I am recommending
the darker color so you will not go through what I am going
through now. Maroon will look beautiful and will be easier to
care for. It will make the greens "pop". I think you will be
much happier if you choose that color. But my friend you have
to live with it so in the end it's your decison, so don't let
anyone tell you otherwise (like I did) because then you'll be
miserable for years like I am. I'm saving up now for new
chocolate brown carpet to match my new chocolate brown slipcover!

Hi Opal, It has been a pleasure to help where I can and I am pleased to hear that you are having so much fun here. I was being drawn more to the green and have both swatches on the floor now and for some reason now the maroon (which is a lighter shade and more flecked is looking more appealling. It has taken a gif of a cheque from my dad and me saving hard to get the money together for this so it is not a decision to make lightly as you say. I am sure that by Monday I will have made my choice. Most people here though have gone with the green so far. I have just spoken to a friend on the phone and she said the maroon wouldn't look too dark as my lounge is massive and very light anyway. Oh what a dilema. I will let you know what I choose though. I do think maroon would be too dark, and you already have green. It has to be a color that matches both. But then you said you have a little one, so that would not work. I would go either green or brown or maybe camel, but you do have a lot of green. The trouble is it is hard to match something to go with Maroon and Green together. You could see if gray might match. That is a neutral.

That sounds like a good idea. It is hard to match green and maroon. They seem to be at the opposite end of the spectrum. Neutral is the way to go. Oh and send us a picture when you are finished. I would like to see the end results.

Hi Suspenseful, I have infact gone with a neutral colour now of a dark beige fleck which means if I change the wals of the furniture I am not limited in choice at all. It is a hardwearing one that because of the fleck will not show up the odd mark. Ellie :D

It's hard to choose, if I hadn't known I would go for brickstone or a dark green because that's a colour that really brings out the rest in the room.
Brickstone looks natural but warm and dark green makes it feel forestly and pure and the purple accents give a nice contrast as yellow and purple are contrast colours in the colour cirkle and green is only a hint of blue away from yellow . Good luck deciding, hope you'll get some helpfull tips around here!

I'm sorry I most have overread the part of them being lighter than the furniture, I thought you were going for darker shades because maroon is dark type of purple isn't it? Not sure now though... I'll try and keep updated on the carpeting!

Hi Cyberfluff both the maroon and the green are lighter in shade rather than dark but I feel the green would go better. I have always gone with a natural beige neutral colour carpet before but with the little one feel I should get something a bit darker and hardwearing. I will let you know what I choose though. Out of the two colours you have given I would go with the green, with the description of the room I would think that the green carpet would bring out the colours of the wood furniture and leather sofas and would go well with the pot plants and walls, the maroon colours would set off everything else with them being darker. I think that to have a maroon carpet would make it all seem dull and old fashioned as maroon is such a heavy colour.

Hi Gemini_rose, I think that I am being drawn more towards the green myself especially as the curtains and sofas are dark. It is a light and airy room but I think the maroon would close it in a bit. I will let you know what I decide though and maybe post picure of finshed room. Oh I'm so ecited I have not had carpets since I moved here two and half years ago it will be luxury eh! Ellie :D

If your problem with natural colors is that they get stained too easily, I think you'll find that is also true with a light green color. If everything in the room is lightly shaded (not counting the furniture and the curtains), I think you can pull off the darker color of maroon or a darker shade of green. Maroon can act almost as a neutral color with so many other colors, but certain greens are a bit harder to combine. If you can, I would take either a curtain with you as well as an example of one of the greens so you can see them up next to the actual carpet. Unless you have a throw pillow in the same shade of leather - take that instead of the curtain. A dark carpeting can darken a room but if it stains, it isn't nearly as noticeable (red juice on a green carpet might be), so it will always look clean after shampooing.
I've always wondered why landlords choose light-colored carpeting for rental units and then complain about the stains!! They'd save so much money if they just put dark carpeting in all the units!

Hi, I have in fact been back down today and got more samples and I have come back with a dark beige, taupe type colour as well as a darker green, both look good and I am still deciding. Thanks for your help and advice but agree a paler green would stain in the same way as naturale so have bought in the naturals that I love in a darker shade. I will let you know what I decide though. That works, too. LOL I hope you're happy with it!! I once saw someone putting BLACK carpeting in their home. Seemed strange, but I think they had whites and brights in that room, so it might have worked. Plus, I think they had kids, so maybe they grew tired of all the spills and didn't want to have to replace carpeting. I'd have rather kept hard wood floors. They're very nice to have with area rugs.

for me i would select the green its cool to the eyes and its unique.maroon also good if your wall paint is white then looking nice and advantage of it the dirt is not visible if maroon, so for modern color i select green.

Having seen the area of which you speak, I would choose the green carpet. My reasons are that if you have a maroon one, your sofas will get lost in the carpet and as you say, make the room look darker. If you have green, it will bring out the other greens in the walls and plant pots, whilst blending well with the maroon sofas and curtains. A beige one is really out of the question, although it would make the room look bigger, but there again, as your front entrance is very close to the living room, then dirt would be walked through, especially when wet. Yes, you can get visitors and Jacob to take off their shoes before entering the living room, but better to be safe.
On this basis, I would opt for green, my friend. I think it will look really nice. Brightest Blessings. xx

Since I'm in a mood to look deeply into things and debate their relevance of late, I find your choice of colours quite amusing, hence they are similar colours to the on and off lights of a television set!
Joking aside, I can really picture the green on your floor. It would bring a feeling of nature and the outside to the room, but then again, maroon is a very rich and warm colour, so it is a difficult choice. Also, if the maroon is flecked with other colours, perhaps if there was an accident, it would be hidden slightly by the flecks of colour? Just a thought. I'm sure whichever of those two colours you chose, it will look good because your walls are light.

Hi Thanks Darkwing, Your advice is really appreciated especially as you are the only person on here to have actually seen the room for real and sat i it and laughed in it. Green would definitely enhance the painting of Glastonbury eh and the Cats in the Conservatory picture too and with the plants as well yes I was drawn more to the green but funnily enough the maroon as it is a pale one with flecks of other colours in it does look better in the swatch on the floor at the moment but will give myself the weekend to make the final choice and even not certain will get them to still come and measure on Monday but think some more as it is an expensive descision to get wrong eh! I will let you know though what I dedcide. Huggles. Ellie @:D

Hi Darkwing, well after reading all these posts last night and the green not looking too good once the light changed I went back down to the carpet shop and even though beige would be too light have gone for a taupe fleck type one which actually flows better gives warmth won't show the dirt and links in with the laminate on the kitchen floor too. Haven't decided 100% but gut feeling says this is the right one. Thanks for you help and advice, appreciated as ever. Ellie :D

I think I would go for the green sweetheart as at least it wouldn't make the room to dark - but I wouldn't want to go for too light a shade - been there , done that! I would hate to go back to carpets in my living room again when I still had kids - I don;t know how many would have been ruined in the last almost 7 years - all I can say is thank goodness for laminate! xxx

Hi Mummymo, I wish I could have laminate but my house is just so cold in the winter as not central heating that I need to make it warmer. Yes the green would look good but long term now I am thinking it may be a bit limiting so have got extra samples and now have a really dark beige with fleck which is looking good as it also links up with the laminate in the kitchen . I will let you know which one I go for though. Ellie :D

Hi Skinnychick, I didn't go for either colour in the end. I went with a dark beige fleck one so a neutral shade so no matter what the decor it will go with. Green would have been good but if I wanted to change the colour scheme in the future I would have been limited. Ellie :D

After giving this carpet color choice more thought, and reading responses from others, here's how I'm swaying and I think you are too: Carpeting is a long-term investment. Matching your furniture and wall colors that you have now doesn't take into account that your tastes might change, so choosing a neutral carpet color will serve you well over the long haul :)

Hello Joyce, I am rather partial to green myself as I find it very relaxing, the sample I had chosen however went a bit grey looking in certain lights so have been back for more samples and have picked up some darker beige, taupe type colours and hey look rather good too. I will let you know though what I decide. Ellie :D

personally id go with the green. everything else in yer room is pretty much marroon, adding carpet the same color would just overdo it. the green will offset it nicely and bring out the other accents you have around and the colors of yer walls.. you really dont want the floor to be the same color as the furniture and the drapes... go green!

Hi Tessa, I didn't go with green or maroon in the end. I chose a dark beige fleck one which is more neutral and will go with whatever colour scheme I choose. Thanks for advice though I would have gone with green if I knew I'd be keeping the walls that colour. Ellie :D

Between the two if I had to, I would pick the green. Personally I would pick a neutral color. I'm afraid that a green or a maroon for that matter would be too dark and would make the room look smaller. You could pick a tweed that have bits of green or maroon in it and still be neutral and still not show dirt with a little one around. As long as you like what you pick it really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. Everyone has different tastes and different ideas. Go with your gut instinct! Best wishes!

Hi, I am now inclined to agree with you, having slept on it over night the paler green begun to look grey in certain lights which is a definite no no but the maroon is a lighter shade than the sofas and doesn't look too bad it added warmth but a fleck in a taupe or beige may look good so I am going down for more samples later. I will let you know what I decide. Ellie :D

Its good not to rush into a major decision such as this. I had paint swatches taped on my dining room walls for months, before I made a final decision. Picking out carpet is even harder since you know that you can't change it as easily as paint color. Good luck with whatever you decide.

You might have decided right now or you already have the carpet on the floor right now but if i were to ask about the colour. If you don't like the maroon because it would make the room darker, you can choose green to match the wall.So which one have you chosen?

Hi Checapricorn, I love green too because it is the colour of nature and the maroon with the pale green would look good too as the lounge is a very large room so I could get away with it. I was drawn to the green earlier to enhance the walls and the pctures but I have the swatches down and the plaer maroon is being to look appealling too. Such a hard decision but one I will make over the weekend and I will let you know which one I choose. Ellie :D

Hi Ellie,
I would go with the green to because it seems it will bring out your accent pieces and offset the maroon. Maybe it comes with or you can get it Scotch Guarded so you won't have to worry about stains.

Hi LadyT, Even though I was drawn to the green it didn't look right when the light changed it went a sort of grey so I went down today and got a different shade which looks good as it has flecks in it, maroon is out now but I now have a sample of a taupe colour with flecks in which is neutral if I change the wall colours in the future but still goes. I am very undecided still but will let you know what I choose. Ellie :D

If they were the only two colors...I would go with the green....the darkness of the maroon will show up every little speck of lint...etc. The green would be a peaceful background to the maroon couches. I would of course go with a neutral if it were up to me.....but I totally understand why you wouldn't do that color. I have that now and it's taken a beating....but still looks pretty good. Good luck with the choice!

Hi Jill, I have always gone neutral myself in the past too and never had colour carpet at all both carpets are paler shades of the colour with a slight fleck in so I think I am going to pop down and see what shades of beige they have to see if they would work, maybe darker beige with flecks so the dirt wouldn't show as much. I will let you know what I decide though. Ellie :D

Hi Alpha, I have both the samples down at the moment and even though earlier I was more drawn to the green the maroon is actually giving a warmth now and it is a paler shade than the sofas so they are not lost in it. Hmmm ... I love both maroon and green - and my first thought is maroon, but as your sofas are that colour it might be a bit much. It wouldn't show the dirt as much as the paler green, though. If you had maroon carpet, you could have pale green cushions on the sofas to lighten things up a bit. Wow - hard. Pity you don't have one of those home decorating programs on your computer where you can put in the colours of everything and see how they go - that would be great for working out things like that - I've often been tempted to buy one. Maroon looks very lush and classy in a big room.

Hi Guybrush, It is a maroon fleck which is a lot plaer than the sofas and even though I was drawn to the green last night as the light changed it started looking grey, yuk so maroon now or I am going down to get another sample in a taupe fleck colour as I tend to go for neutral colours usually. I will let you know what I choose though. Ellie :D
