Typing the proper way...

I just wish I can type the proper way but maybe my hands are too stiff to learn the proper way of typing. When I type here and when I typed this discussion my fingers were marching to and fro and like a confused person getting to one place to another, one finger bunping the othr finger. I just envy those people who type the proper way ocz it saves time and effort, and one big advantage of not typing properly and not using the rigt finger for each letter is that we can have words spelled wrongly.

I took a typing class in highschool. It has definately helped, but I'm still not a very fast typist. My left hand tends to type a bit ahead of my right hand when I start to type fast, so my letters come out all mixed up. I also still have to look at the keys every now and then. I think it is more habit than anything else, once my hands are on the proper keys to start with, I'm ususally okay if I don't try to go too fast. I always have to look when I'm using numbers though, thouse are the hardest for me along with some of the lesser-used punctuation marks. Once you learn where to start your fingers it is really just a matter of practice; lots and lots of it... and avoiding th impulse to go back to your "hunt and peck" habits when you get frustrated. Good Luck.

Looking at the keyboard is probably a habit out of insecurity (are my fingers in the right place????). Most keyboards have a little raised dot or ridge on the f and j keys. If your index fingers can feel those indicators, you usually know your hands are in the right position.

I had no problem at all learning how to type. It was just a matter o memorizing the compuer keyboard, and putting my fingers in the right place on the middle row. I taught mysel how to type. In fact, I took a keyboarding class in highscool just for the easy credit. ;)

You can practice. I type the right way. My mom made me take typing lessons when I was a teenager.

I tend to think that whatever works, works. Whatever allows one to type is the proper way for that person. I've seen people without any special training typing basically as fast as people with training - without misspelling either:) Sure it's nice to be able to put the fingers in the proper places, it allows for fast typing but it's not essential. Come to think about it when I was back home I had training and what finger to use where, then I came here and had to re-learn the whole thing again because the letters were in different keys in the keyboard.

I took some typing in high school. After I was out of college I took another typing class. Then I did data entry for 15 years and can touch type. It does take practice, you might consider getting a self paced typing program and trying it out. Or, even cheaper, get an old book about teaching typing and doing it. I really can't remember much from the class I took after college, but I can remember the one in high school. She had us put our fingers on the "home" row and starting with the left index finger go from "f" to "g" and back for a line, then from "f" to "r" for a row, etc. I got the term "splat" for the "star" or "asteric" from that class and the first time I used it on the former roommate she thought it was hysterical. Practice, practice, practice is all I can advise.

You can get a typing program they have plenty of them on the market right now to learn how to type and with correct finger placement on the keys. I learned how to type in highschool and it just stuck. Even after not typing for a while. It's like once your fingers learn the keys the remember the keys with no problem with practice. So find a program that works for you and you will be on your way typing correctly.

I had two years of typing in high school. I never did learn how to type the proper way without looking at the keys either. I still look at they keys when typing but I have learned to type alot faster than I sued to though. It works for me. I guess I will never learn how to type the proper way either. I don't have the time to learn it now. I am happy with looking at the keys even though I still making some typing errors every now and then by not proof reading before sending.

Hi Zel, As much as I wish also but I don't have the skills..I have no subject related to this when I was in School..LOL! I am like you, tying where my fingers are crossing to each others side of the keyboard... I envy my officemate before who can type fast with proper fingering and she needs not to see the screen, she will just focus on the draft or paper while doing so..Amazing..LOL! I have tried actually to learn, but maybe I am too old for that and I will be too way slow when I will do it! Have no patience now!

i never learnt how to type properly. I missed the fist semester of typing class as I chose riding instead. A mistake. I quit that since the horses we had were insane. So now I cannot really ride nor type well at all. But I get by somehow.

well you don't have to learn to type in the proper way as long as you are comfortable in the way you're typing... Errr... i hate the person who invented that typing in the proper way thingy.
