I have been on the Duragesic Brand of 'fentanyl for years. Recently, I was told by my insurance provider that they were no longer going to pay for DURAGESIC BRAND. Up until recenty, I could not use any other brand due to allergic reaction to I think the fillers that they put in the medication patches.
SO, I was on a panic, searching for a substitute and I TOTALLY FOUND THE GENERIC. 1/3RD THE COST OF DURAGESIC. THE BRAND NAME IS SANDOZ. So, I tried 2 patches and was absolutely ok! no problems!! I feel totally relieved that I did the research and came across this. I took this information to my DR, and the Pharmacy and they were pleased to get that information. My dr said that now some patients that would benefit from Fentanyl can probably get it now, because MY INSURANCE APPROVED it!
An example: I was to get (30)75mcg patches cost 1975 - Duragesic vs 675 on Sandoz

Unfortunately, I have to take fentanyl. To be honest... I wasn't too keen on it. I got on this and increased slowly.. If you dont get on it slow then you will feel like crap. I KNOW fentanyl works - it is a strong medication and if it didnt work for you- It's only because you didnt have enough. I was on so many meds and the strengths were getting larger and larger, I said what can we do..
So I had a spinal stimulator put in and tried the patch and actually I am on A LOT LESS FENTANYL then I used to be! I dont want the morphine pump yet, cuz I dont feel I am ready for it. I want to give the stimulators a longer time to work. It's only been since Aug 2005 for the one for my low back and Nov 2006 for Inter-stim (another thing I found on the net and asked about because the techonology wasnt in my home town area- I would have had to go to Seattle or Spokane WA for treatment as I did 20 yrs ago.
So soon I hope to be totally off the fentanyl.. but for now - this is what works. (at times I feel like I want MORE, but I just tell myself to take a tylenol...lol
Thanks for your input!
