I just bought a house and need to try to salvage the carpet for awhile until I can afford to purchase new. I have a carpet shampooer. I am looking for any and all suggestoins on what I can use to get the best results.
The carpet is badly stained in places. It is beige in color. I have attached a picture of the carpet in the worst room.

I have had the best luck with using Resolve Dual Power. It works sort of like Oxyclean. I used it both to spot treat and to clean the carpet (squirt it on, let it sit for a few minutes, then follow behind with the carpet shampooer). I have an older home with old berber carpet in the den, and this perked it right up. It was quite stained before.
Good luck, and congratulations on your home purchase!

Thanks for the advice. It is always best to hear from someone elses experience on what works. I will make sure to pick up some Resolve Dual Power before I head over to try to clean them.
Maybe some others will join in on the discussion with other remedies.

Just be sure you test a small, hidden area with the Resolve before you use it on a large area. In the process of removing your stains, it could turn the carpet lighter than you want. You should be able to test it in a closet and see how the carpet dyes react.

With as bad as the carpets are, I had contemplated adding a small amount of bleach to the mixture. I am not concerned with fading of color. The carpets are on their last leg and need to be replaced. I just want to try to extend the life of them by a few months while I get settled in.
Of course that means I have to go through the whole moving all the furnature in and out of rooms come spring.

Congrats on geting your house. It would be great if you could get your carpet before moving in. Lowes Home Improvment store has great deals. I recently bought a house too. I got my carpet for 2 rooms for under $600 including pad and installation. I have experience with cleaning carpets. Does your carpet cleaner extract the water. If it just shampoos, it would be a good idea to rent a steam cleaner. The carpet needs to be rinsed and extracted. After cleaning it is important to extract as much of the water as you can, it helps with drying faster and gets more dirt out of the fibers. Capture has some very good cleaners. You can get it at Lowes and Home Depot. Good Luck.

Yes my shampooer does extract. The waste water is always disgusting. Makes me think twice about recarpeting. I may just opt for hardwood floors next spring.
I can't afford to do replacements at this time. That would be the best solution but not feasable.

I like to use the Hoover steam cleaner. I have always had great cleaning with that machine.
I like to use something called Awesome cleaner. you can get it at the dollar store. It cleans everything and anything. If you have never tried this cleaner you have to try it at least once. It cleans windows, floors, laundry etc.
I had recieved a piano on freecycle a year or so ago and wanted to get all the years of dirt off the top. I sprayed on the Awesome Cleaner and waited like 2 seconds and then proceded to removed what I had sprayed on... I was amazed at how much dirt actually came off the piano that I did not even realize was dirt.
I like to spot spray too on tougher stains to help remove them.

This is more good information. I will have my opportunity to try out all of the advice in this discussion next week when I close on the home.
