I really love to shop for souvenirs when I go traveling. I have built up a collection of costume dolls from different countries that I have been to. I have also bought postcards and fridge magnets. Which souvenirs do you tend to buy? Have you ever got any lovely souvenirs? Thanks

Hi maximax8! Wow, I do like the costume dolls but they are kinda expensive. However, I do love buying souvenirs when I get to travel. I have a collection of masks, fridge magnets, shirts, key chains and a few decorative plates that has the scenic designs of each countries I have visited. And I usually buy "Coke" in my travels because each country has a different kind of packaging for Coke. I just packaged them well so the content of the coke bottle won't spill during my flight back home. Take care and God Bless!

Hi Faith. Yes, sometimes I am shocked at the high prices of costume dolls. I have to get one from each country that I go to if this is possible. Your collection of masks sound lovely. Coke packaging is different all over the world so that is interesting to collect. Take care and happy traveling.

Faith, I really like to sound of the way you display the beautiful masks that you have collected. I don't have room for many more costume dolls but I always find a way of displaying them. Collections like we have both got are unique and are to be treasured.

Hi maxima8! Yes, the masks are really lovely and we hang them all in our living room and the "Coke" are all in displayed in a glass shelf. And it shocked me too with the cost of costume dolls but they are really lovely to collect. I am sure that your dolls are all lovely to look at and are all worth keeping. It has also been a wish of mine to collect them but never was able to buy them before. Sigh! Take care and God Bless!

hello maximax.. I love to buy souvenirs, especially that I travel alot across many countries.. so I love to buy stuff from here and there.. and it really depends for whom I'm going to buy it.. but one thing is in common, is that I buy things that have good value, and will last long.. after all souvenirs are to be kept right?

Heh what a great question. When I go somewhere I need to get a ball cap and I buy my mother coffee from the region and a coffee mug. It is great to search for just the right gift but to know what it is that you are searching for. Thanks Zelo

That is one of the greatest things is not buying souveniers at a shop but actually going to a local market or local store that is off the tourists way. First you will find the wares are a LOT less expensive and second the experience of the people is something that you can always take with you as a 'free' souvenier. As for the mugs... I have been all over the world and have yet to break one... hope my luck continues on that front. Thanks Zelo

Zeloguy, the best market place I have seen is in Nairobi. I saw lovely wooden animals in the shops but the same things were way cheaper in the market. I got a five foot tall giraffe and lots of smaller animals. I am glad that you haven't broken any mugs on your way home.

Thanks Zelo. I think ball caps with place names on look really cool. I buy cups and mugs sometimes too but have to be careful that they don't break on the way home. I like to buy tea for my mum and a t-shirt as well. Yes, when searching I always know which souvenirs I am looking for. I looked in countless shops before I found just what I wanted on a market stall.

I am not very fond of souvrniers - not the touristy kinds anyways. I used to collect both dolls and spoons as a child. Now we'll probably get something made locally like a blanket, tablecloth, a painting - something like that. Something we really like and that will be part of our home in a away. and we usually do get a magnet.

yes the dolls are beautiful It depends a bit how we travel and where we've been what we get. In my experience it has been safe to bring well packaged artworks as cabin luggage.

Yes, really tacky souvenirs I could go without but costume dolls look lovely when there is a large collection of them. I think locally made things like tablecloths and blankets are often very well made. Taking home a painting is worrying in case I damage it on the way home. I bought back a model Indonesian house in a box and that kept quite safe on a long and at times quite rough journey.

Bell - Keychain
I don't have extra money to buy expensive souvenirs. I can only afford key chains I normally select a key chain with a design has something to do with a country's symbol. For example I bought a key chain from Singapore with a Merlion etching. I use to buy metal bells for my wife. She loves these bells and asks anyone of her relatives and best friends to buy her when they travel.

Yes, I have seen some gorgeous looking bells with place names on. Key chains are small and reasonably priced so that is a good choice. I have seen the Merlion in Singapore and think it is a lovely symbol of that wonderful country.

Yes, I have been to amazing Venice and I have been to the lovely island of Sardinia. I would love to go back to Italy and see Rome, Florence, the coastline and islands near Naples and the island of Sicily. I bought a porcelain doll in Venice. Thanks for the offer of an Italian souvenir, that is so very kind of you. I hope that you go around the world one day soon.

When I went to Rhodes I brought back some lovely pebbles from the beach, they were very pretty and eye-catching, I have put them in a little box and they look very effective on my dressing table, every time I see them they remind me of the wonderful time I had in Rhodes and the significance of the time I left my ex and started a new life! I love stones, pebbles and rocks, I should have been a geologist hey! Best thing is, they were free! And I will always have them, fond memories and one of my favourite souvenirs I have brought back from my travels!

I can just about imagine the lovely pebbles that brought back from Rhodes and now you treasure so dearly. Yes, they were free unlike many other expensive souvenirs that were for sale in Rhodes. I love to see pebbles, crystals and rocks. When I was in Latvia and Lithuania I saw much amber for sale but it was extremely pricey. I heard that it can be found on the beach in the spring and autumn yet they sell it for lots of money. I am glad that you are enjoying your life and have happy memories of your travels.

Hi MaxiMax . . . my daughter and I love to collect playing cards from different countries or states. We ususally start with the airlines. I don't know if they let us do it now though. We'd probably have to pay for it. Anyhow, our collection isn't all that big yet. But we'll get there.

I got my first costume doll in 1990 from Finland now I have a whole shelf full of costume dolls from around the world. Good luck to you and your daughter with your collecting.

I also like buying souvenir items when traveling to a different country or new place. Usually I buy ceramic items with the name of the place written on it. I had bought a ceramic fan and kettle from singapore, a ceramic photo holder from vancouver. I also like buying small items like key chains and post cards too and items which resemble the place I have gone to, like the mini twin towers from KL.

It sounds like you have brought back some lovely souvenirs. Small items like key chains are easy to carry. I bought lots of pottery in the Netherlands and all it got home without being broken luckily. It is really enjoyable for me to look back at all my old postcards. I often get asked if I want stamps, but no I want them for my collection.

Normally I buy coffee mugs, magnets and postcards. I always take a lot of pictures and I also buy stickers if I find any that are different. I usually include the postcards and stickers in my scrapbook pages I do. I also usually try to bring something back for my s/o's daughter, a t-shirt or something. If we happen to be going on a trip on the Harley, it's good that I buy small souvineers since I can buy any thing large! lol

As long as they are packed carefully it is great to bring back coffee mugs. I bought back a lovely and unusual one for a friend. The top part of the handle fell off so my friend glued it back together. I got a wonderful t'shirt in Latvia for my mum. It must be fun to make a scrapbook of your travels.

My husband gravitates towards baseball caps with the name of the place on it. (He has 120 hats so far.) I tend to like t-shirts with the town's name on it. If I can't afford that, then I pick up pens, magnets, shot glasses, coffee mugs, or a similar small item - as long as the town or museum is on it. I have not been able to find postcards too much much any more, so I take my own photos. Stuffed animals and dolls - I have a couple, but they are expensive. I go mostly to places in Penna., New Jersey, New York, Maryland. I have also visited Virginia, Massachussetts, and Delaware. We were in the Poconos in June, and next week we will be in Niagara Falls (Canadian side).

Wow! Your husband has lots of baseball caps. Yes, I like t-shirts with place names on too and they are quite light to pack. I bought some wooden carved animals in Kenya, including a 5 foot tall giraffe. I got quite a few strange looks carrying that on to my flight home. It is a shame that some costume dolls are expensive but it is because they are hand made. I saw some very pricey ones in Latvia then I saw a lovely little hand made doll on a market stall. I hope that you have a wonderful time in Canada. I am sure that the Niagara Falls is stunningly beautiful.
