My father once told me that his favorite Aesop's fable was the tale of the wager between the wind and the sun. After arguing between themselves about which of the two was stronger, the wind and the sun noticed a man passing by, wearing a coat and a hat. They decided that the man would settle the debate for them - as the stronger of the two would be able to remove the man's coat and hat.
The wind blew to gale force, trying to rip the hat and coat off of the man, but no matter how hard the wind blew, the man only grasped his hat and coat tighter and tighter and would not let go. By and by, the wind gave up, and allowed the sun to have its turn.
In glorious splendor the sun shown, beaming brighter and brighter (and hotter and hotter) upon the man, who very quickly removed both hat and coat.
And the moral of the story is...
And - do you have a favorite Aesop's fable?

Aesop's fables are simple stories with great truths. And one of the beautiful features of these fables is that they often convey more than one truth. You wrote of the wind and the sun that "warm words can get a better effect than a cold attitude"; I had learned: "gentle persuasion is better than force".

I like the one about the lion and the mouse, too. That's the one where the lion lets the mouse go, and then the mouse comes back and helps the lion out of a net, right?
Thanks for your reply!
