I encountered a spyware and virus. its like a one-to-punch for me. My admin privileges were blocked i can see a Bio-hazard pic in my desktop theme colored in red and IE browsers were instantly popping-out, can't see my hard drives. That really freaked me out bug time. Having a virus is a troublesome matter

when my dad bought me a 486 dx2 i think 10 years ago, i destroyed it. literally making the hard disk explode. after a year or so of using it. sometimes it will not boot up properly, stating that no hardisk was detected from the bios. so i checked the wiring going to the hard disk if it is properly secured. the bad thing is i did not turn off the computer. after yanking it. pooof. it all went black.lol. the hard disk was smoked and since my dad didn't want to buy another one for me. for almost a year i've been using bootable disk to start my pc and guess what i've used for typing my assignments? Wordstar on dos command.lol.

do laptop counts? if so, apart from:
a. falling from the upper bunk bed and causing the charger's pin broke
b. someone stepped onto it causing the body/screen connectors broke and i can only open the screen some 30-50 degree without totally breaking them apart
c. physical damage of my hard disk causing it to made weird ticking sound
i think the worst thing ever happened to my laptop is the recently happened problem to my motherboard. it fried my motherboard and my hard disk and probably other stuff too but i haven't evaluate the total damage yet

well, i'm thinking of getting a new one.the computer almost reached its 4th birthday when it happened. so it's time to say goodbye i guess. plus finding the motherboard would be hard (considering the age) and expensive too. my rough estimation of the motherboard is myr500-1000 and a new laptop with better specs are like myr2000-3000. so i'm soooooooo going to get a new one
the unfortunate events happened separately. like one big event every year. haha... and the motherboard is the grand finale. and it happened in my final year when i need to complete a project before i can graduate. and i'm a computer science student. comp sc student without a comp. hmm...

How about buying a desktop computer?, that would be more reliable than a laptop.

Well! i had such kind of spyware and virus attack many times... hence i wont say it was the worst thing that happened to my pc...
Suddenly it starts to rain with lightning and thuders... and my pc goes off...
When current comes back.... I start my pc to find that... my motherboard is gone... it wont start....
I had my motherboard replaced and noticed that my ram was also not working... I had to buy a new one... and then my hard disk also had got some bad sectors on it........

Too bad sir, that must've been the lighting that caused your pc to crash.

A friend of mine brought her very tiny notebook to me due to virus infection. It really gave a big head ache because any window open will automatically close after a few seconds. I can not do a scan with it, I can't install a different antivirus, I can not even open DOS command prompt. Even in safe mode all window auto close, tried the system restore and it still the same. I am about to give up fixing it and do a complete format, but of course like in all the case she has very important data that need to be saved.
What I come up with was connect her notebook in LAN using cross link cable, luckily she had shared her entire c drive. I use my Antivirus to scan here entire drive and disinfect it. When done I boot her up and it work properly. I then updated her AV and remind her to do it regularly.

When a virus entered my computer system, it made my laptop to shut itself even it is fully charged. I also can not connect to the internet while my brother is enjoying himself playing an online video. Some of my saved pictures can not be opened and my paper files have been corrupted. Luckily, I saved a back-up copy of my files in a flash disk.

separate your data and program files (create partitions) and most of the time you can just reformat the program files (usually with the OS) and the data will stay untouched
you can also use ghost for whole disk backup once in a while

To me, Norton products is rubbish!. Norton Ghost is "too technical" for most non-tech person so i don't recommend to use it. If its only for personal use, don't even bother installing Norton Ghost.

I was reinstalling SAP for my company server and toying with net at the same time
One funny virus affected my server and folders wont open.
So I had to format my server PC and install SAP from scratch.Nearly 30 GB of company data got erased and received a severe warning from my boss.
I learned some thing and stopped using net on server

omg. messing with your own data is bad enough (all those disinfecting and/or reformatting, restoring stuff) and you actually messed up with the company's??? whoaaa... dude. that's a kamikaze act!

Whew!!..Your boss must be blazing angry at you. Got to be careful with those protocols cause a virus may leak and destroy everything.

I can still remember back when I was in college. I had a Pentium 166 PC and I planned to upgrade and it was to expensive. I started to consider buying second hand parts. So I bought a second hand motherboard and a processor, an AMD K6-2 300. It was terrible. The motherboard has power but kept on making different beeps. I studied it and I had to try and try for more than 3 hours. It was frustrating. Then, the processor burnt to a crisp. I wasted money and I had to wait again for a while to buy a brand new set.

One thing - it shut down. I can not do anything!
I am using my laptop now and I would like to use my desktop at home but I can't. my desktop is really old. I think I will be replacing that once I get the money.
