I used to tidy up toys at various times in the day until I lost count of how many times I was doing it and now I just leave it till the end of the day as long as they're in a place we won't trip on them or sit on them!
How often do you tidy up your kids' toys? Once a day, after each play or have you taught them to tidy it up by themselves?

I tidy them up a couple of times a day, usually before the nursery run if im not coming straight home if I am I leave them. Then I normally tidy them again mid afternoon while the youngest has a nap and then they both help me tidy up in the evening just before they go to bed

Yes I find myself picking up after my four year old son. I know he is quite capable of cleaning up. Sometimes he vacuums the floor. Imagine that! My husband and I try to get him to put his toys away sometimes. My son will do it sometimes and other times I just end up putting them away just to get it done. It takes time to teach children. After a while it will become a part of them to know what to do.

I don't pick up my kids toys they do. Even my 18 month old daughter picks up her own toys. I have them pick up their toys several times a day. To me there is not reason for them to have a dozen toys out at once since they cannot play with all of them at the same time.

My children are older now but they were always taught to clean up their toys when they were finished playing which worked really well. I now have my grandchildren over quite a lot and I bring one box of toys out for them to play with and don't worry about the mess until they are ready to go home and then I get them to help me pick everything up. As you say, as long as there is nothing to trip over or sit on what is the harm of a few toys around the house for a while.

I keep all my daughters toys in one room, then I pick the toys up from around the house at the end of the day and put them in her room. (She is 2) I clean her room thoroughly about 1-2 times a week, the other times i just shut the door. Once I clean it she thinks everything looks better on the floor anyways so whats the point. One day she will be able to clean her own room, i am looking forward to that.
