My cordless phone handset don't work

I just bought a cordless phone from the store. Brand new. I plug it in the base, it says ready then the screen goes blank. I let it charge for over 20 hours now, still nothing.The manual told me to press down the menu button till something shows up, I pressed it down for like 10 min and nothing happened. Mines is GE model 25951. Thanks for any help.
