Crazy Idea? Non-Politician As President of U.S.

I was just thinking - suppose we found some non-politician, a normal, everyday type of man or woman to run for president? Of course, they would have to be very intelligent so that they would comprehend the many issues involved. They would have to be extremely honest, as this is something I feel that politicians have a problem with. Maybe someone who is ex-military so that they would understand the way the military works. Please let me know your thoughts on this subject. Thank you.

They've actually tried it in the past, of course, electing a Western actor whose main claim to fame was being in a movie where he didn't get nominated for an Oscar but the chimpanzee in it did. But even he had held political office previously. I don't think people would go for it. You could nominate the smartest person in the country, but if they had no experience of politics, the opposition would throw them to the sharks, and win by a landslide. Bear in mind that the candidate can be as smart as you like, but the voters tend, well, not to be. The burning issues in the recent democratic nominations, remember, were 'Which one is black?' and 'Which one is a woman?'. Coming in a little behind in third place is 'Does they believes in Jesus!' I think it comes down to the old adage that people get the politicians they deserve ;)

I agree, Wolf, someone who is not a politician would be thrown to the sharks; but, what if both candidates were equally non-politicans? Actually, I know nothing like this could ever happen (in my lifetime anyway), but I just think we might get a President who would really care and not just feed us a bunch of bull. As far as people getting the policitians they deserve, I have to disagree with you there. I did NOT vote for Bush, but I have been forced to live under his "tyranny" for 8 loooong years!

I would think that it would fly. However it would have to be a person of strong integrity and morals or the government would eventually brush off on them and they would become what we have now. I would love to a president that is more for the people than his on political status.

Exactly my sentiments, bailey. We need someone who really cares about the people, not just wants to be President for the prestige or whatever. This whole campaign, I feel, has been about Is America Ready For A Woman or a Black. I don't care if they are purple, as long as they do what is right for the country. Do what will help our wonderful country get back to what it was before.

I try to encourage regular people to take active roles. To become the honest politicians they know we need, to run for President even...I hope someday they will. I've been told I need to run for President someday, lol. I'm not a politician at all, I'm a high school blogger, but...maybe I will. I mean...someone's gonna take the leap to lead by example, right? I never wanted to be a leader of a country though...so I hope someone else does it before I have to consider it, heh.

Well, see...that's why I'm trying to help as well I can now. I'm young yet so I can't attend any protests that aren't local, attend gatherings and rallies to discuss things...but blogging is something anyone can do...and I get enough traffic now on my site that I hope just talking about it enough...talking to other bloggers about it, will help. Knowledge is power, right? Getting ideas out there increases the chance that someone will start thinking and realize stuff needs done and they can do someting about it. Things are getting pretty dire, I agree. Here's the positive though; I think there's always hope for this country as long as there's people who care enough to work toward changing it for the better. Doesn't matter if they're a minority. Minority's can accomplish things too, after all. This country isn't its government, it's its people. As long as we remember that, there's always hope =) Good luck remaining positive yourself, dearie ^_^ I'll keep trying too. Thanks for posting such an interesting discussion!

Thanks for responding, xPara. It is admirable that you, as a high-schooler, have an interest in politics and our country's future. I think that when the time comes, as long as you keep your ideals as you grow, you should consider helping our country. I'm just afraid that before you come of age to be president, our country will be in such dire straits that no one can save it. It seems to be headed that way now. Stay positive and stay cool!

that sounds like a good idea. but would they let him in. there is so much game playing. just like nice guys can't make it in, someone practical the may cruelly block him or her out. it's tough breaking into it. but someone reasonable could fix a lot of things for sure.
