Rate of Peso over Dollar

This discussion is for Filipino mylotters. After some time of peso being stronger than the dollar, the dollar is now slowly gaining strength over the peso. How do you feel about this? I guess most people are happy especially the Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their family back in the Philippines because it will increase the value of remittances. However the strong dollar also brings higher prices of good and gasoline. Public transportation fees have all raised their prices so guess the extra amount that a dollar remittance brings also has its consequence.

A strong dollar translates to more pesos when exchanged. This also discourages importation because in peso terms the dollar amount becomes more expensive. A strong dollar is good for Filipino exporters who make more pesos when their dollars earnings are exchanged into pesos. OFWs bring dollars into the Philippines making the peso strong and makes the dollar when exchanged for pesos become lesser.

you have a good point on that.. it can affect us both ways in exporting or importing.

i dont know what i feel, besides, i do not earn dollar, i just simply working in a company which give me P10,000. pesos monthly. actually, it is not enough for my family but theres nothing i can do. i just need to be patient. it is better to have job than nothing at all. maybe if i reach my payout here it is my first time to earn dollar. how ever it is only minimal amount.

While it may be true that currency fluctuations affect the prices of commodities, and soaring crude oil prices add to the burden, the real reason why things are not easing up for Filipinos is corruption in government. Don't believe the crap that there is a shortage of funds that's why basic services are not addressed, especially in rural areas. As in the past, the money is going to a few people's pockets who are amassing wealth at the expense of the majority.

Honestly i was in between of being happy and not regaring the peso-dollar rate. CAuse dollar really has an effect to use no matter how we denied it since its considered the universal currency. I am happy of it cause I find that the interest rate of my savings and time deposits depends on the peso dollar rate. So once dollar is high I have high interest but if its low the interest is also low.

This scenario may sound good for the Filipinos working abroad. This will bring more pesos for their loved ones who are left here and waiting for their remittances.
This may also be good for us Filipino mylotters, as we are also receiving payments in dollars. Good for us who already reached payout.
But the impact of all this foreign exchange thing will not make good for the whole Philippines. We need a lot of pesos to buy a single imported item.

I'm not really sure how I feel but it's really difficult now that everything is having a price increase. People now tend to commute more so even using public transportation is now hard. I really just hope that the government may be able to help or something. And hopefully, we the citizens would be ablt to do something too.

wearker dollar means less cost in oils and gasoline which can conclude to cheaper commodities. but what is happening to our country even if the dollar got wearker the products and commodities prices are still high. The salary are still the same but the necessecity are expensive which makes it more unbalanced. Just like other responded said, the exchange rate doesn't do much to our livings.. well good for ofw and those who earn dollar online.

Yes what you are saying is beneficial only to the OFWs who are earning dollars. But for us who earns locally it is our peso that losses its value and you are right about losing our purchasing power in return. I am quite disappointed at what is happening but it is the world economy and our government performance that dictates the future of peso to the dollar.

I don't see any difference. This may be beneficial for OFWs and their families but the prices are still the same, even when the peso is getting strong. We can't do anything about this. prices will still be soaring. wars are still ongoing and gasoline price is increasing almost everyday in the world market. I thinks we should just accept what is coming. this will not set yet. according to market analysts, it will still be the same let alone get worse in the coming years.
hopefully the dollar value will appreciate by December when remittance are at its peak. I know it will be during presidential elections because of government uncertainty.

I am sorry if i don't agree to that.Remember the exchange rate shoots down to $1-39 (please correct me if i am wrong)..we are earning in riyals here. When the dollar is at the lowest, prices-specifically diesel,lpg,etc-keeps on increasing every month at least. So i don't see the connection of strong dollar to the unstoppable increase of price.

Yeah, you're right. I am an OFW. I won't deny though that I am glad the exchange rate seem to go a cent higher everytime I remit my money. It's unfortunate that it brings with it the high prices also. It's actually an advantage and a disadvantage to Filipinos back home and to OFW's too. I can't think of any other way the scale can be balanced in this case.

I remember one of my friend whose father was working in America that told me that she was the only one among her friends that was happy when the dollar exchange rate is rising because for her it means more allowance. But on the other side, it tells us the condition that our country is. Bigger money for some but more spending for the Filipinos in general.

I could rate that the economy of the Philippines now is good because the value of the dollar lowers now. It is good for the Philippines. But it is bad for those people who have relatives abroad and depends only on the dollar earnings.

I can't sense any improvement because we're still struggling with high prices. It's a global issue even our government cannot control it. The right thing to do is find profitable ways to augment our income and waste no time to complain about it.

The price of gasoline is the root cause of all the other price increases especially in food and other commodities. But this has nothing to do with the peso dollar exchange rate. The weaker peso just means that it will cost us more to import rather than to export. But as you said, it shouldn't be aproblem because many OFWs will be remitting money soon as it is almost Christmas. I feel that the government should remove the evat so that we won't be taxed so heavily. We pay so much tax compared to people in other countries, yet the government fails to bring about results and improvement in our country.
