I would really like to sponser a child even though I hardly make much money myself. I would love to make a difference in one of these children's lives. I was wondering if anyone else has or is sponsering a child? If so, which company do you do it through? I was thinking I would go through World Vision, but I don't know how much money actually gets to the children, I would hate to donate 35 dollars a month and find out the child only gets 10 dollars of that. Anyways I'd love to hear from you if you have done some sponsering. ;-)

My wife and I did it for about 10 years with a World Vision predecessor company for a girl in the Philippines. We never met the girl, heard from her about twice and I was never totally sure how much of the money did get to her and her village. However, she grew up and the plan came to an end and we stopped. I am not entirely sure that it was all worthwhile. We felt good in a sort of smug middle class British way, but I had a sneaking feeling that we were applying an elastoplast to a gaping wound. These days I tend to give to agencies that are doing things on a national scale but in a focused manner in the developing country's regions. Medical aid, clean water, building schools, that kind of thing. Good luck though with whatever you decide to do. (Now I read that back it sounds awfully cynical. It's not meant to).
