I am from India and in India we have got various types of Music and because of which we have various types of Songs in various Languages. There are classical songs, devotional songs, folk songs, Ghazals, light Music, Private albums, Film Songs etc practically in all the languages. Since my mother tongue is not Hindi, it is very natural that my favorite song has to be from my mother tongue! But then in Hindi also I have several favorite songs of mine and it is very difficult to select which song is my favorite!
But taking various factors into consideration I feel that my favorite song is “Laaga Chunari mein Daag “ from the Hindi film ‘Dil Hi to hai’. This Song was enacted by Raj Kapoor and was sung for a Katthak Dancer in the movie.
This song is based on Indian Classical Music and it was sung exceptionally well by the one of the great Indian Singer Manna Dey! The melody of this Song and the meaningful lyrics takes you to another world!
The lyrics of the Song , they go like this …
Laaga, chunari mein daag, chhupaau kaise, laaga, chunari mein daag
Chunari mein daag, chhupaau kaise,
Ghar jaau kaise
Laaga, chunari mein daag...
Ho gayi maili mori chunariya,
Kore badan si kori chunariya - 2
Aa ... jaake baabul se,
Nazarein milaau kaise, ghar jaau kaise
Laaga, chunari mein daag...
Bhool gayi sab vachan bida ke kho gayi main sasuraal mein aake
Aa ... jaake baabul se,
Nazre milaau kaise, ghar jaau kaise
Laaga, chunari mein daag...
Kori chunariya aatma mori mail hai maaya jaal -2
Woh duniya more baabul ka ghar,
Ye duniya sasuraal
Haan jaake, baabul se,
Nazre milaau kaise, ghar jaau kaise
Laaga, chunari mein daag
The flow of this song is so smooth with such beautiful wordings, to experience the feeling one has to just listen to this Song by the heart and not by ears !
The meaning of the Lyrics it goes like this. (Chunari is the cloath worn around the head and upper Torso by the Woman folk from the Northern part of India. It is expected that it should be maintained clean by the lady wearing it, as it reciprocates her nature and status!). Here in the Song on behalf of a lady wearing such Chunari the Singer sings and says that , the Chunari got stained and how to hide this stain from the world and how to go back to her home with such a stain!
The Chunari has become dirty, which was just plain and sacred as her body, and with such a stained Chunari how can she go to her Maternal abode and how she can look into the eyes of her parents !
It is further said that she has forgotten all the lessons and teachings given by her parents at the time when she was being sent to her in laws Place after her Wedding, as she was totally got engrossed herself at the Husbands place or in laws place! She feels how to go back to her parents and how to look into their eyes for this mistake of hers!
Till this part this song looks as if it is sort of folk song sung by a village girl, but next few lines completely changes the meaning and the strength of the song. The song further goes on like this.
She says, The plain and clean Chunaria is nothing but it is her Soul and the stain or the dirt is nothing but it is the greed , physical pleasures of attachments. The Place of her parents is the World of the God and the present World what she is referring as her husbands abode is nothing but the present in which she is living!
So thus she means to say that how to meet the God and look at him for she got engrossed in this world and got entangled in the greed and physical pleasures and attachment and neglected the Almighty!
What a great Song! I admire it! Hope you will also admit and admire this favorite song of mine! Thanks!
