Think payphones will ever become obsolete? With all these people walking around with something stuck to there ears..I'm beginning to wonder? Just what would anyone be doing talking on a pay phone now? I saw this Guy on one in front of a convience store like he was camped out..what a strange sight to see now.
Most of the time when i sit outside people watching..A favorite thing to do...maybe 9 people out of 10 walk by and are just talking and laughing..years ago if i saw this and or anyone else the Men in The White Coats would be coming..LOL

Well maybe Men in the white coats should still go after people talking into those cell phones...my theory? That people aren't really talking to anyone but themselves...think of it. Having a cell phone is a good excuse for people who love talking to themselves to SEEM like they are talking to someone. hehe...I for one hope payphones don't get obsolete just in case I'm out an some emergency arises and I need to use one. I'm one of the few neanderthals that doesn't have a cell phone

Hi Rosekitty, Here in the UK there are less and less of them these days and they don't take money anymore as they were being raid,it is all phone cards. I think some will remain and I do know a few people who don't have a mobile, which is quite suprising really in this day and age eh! Ellie :D

Hey ms. rosekitty, meow....
There hardly are any payphones that work anyway. I can count
how many I've seen lately that people actually use. They
are already phasing them out. Isn't that strange. There used
to be one on every corner. Now they are gone, just like
so many things. You are right about people with phones stuck
on their ears, wherever they go. It is soooo annoying to have
to hear all these conversations even if you don't want to.
I especially hate being on the bus and having to hear 10
to 15 going on at once!!!

Hi Opal..Meoww back atcha..purr
And these people have no fear that anyone can hear all their comversations..giving out info..or rudeness to someone..one person came into my store and was gabbing away and didn't hear me say hello..came up to me and said "well are you going to wait on me"..i said "i'm sorry i didn't know your phone number to ask"..lol..

Where I work there are still two pay phone.
I'm not sure if anyone uses them, now that
you bring the subject up. I'm pretty sure
all 500 employees in the company have a cell
phone.
Before Cell Phone were so popular, about 6 or 7
years ago, I went to a small town. I needed to use
the phone. Every pay phone had been vandalized
and riped off the poll. So I'm surprised there are
any left.

yeah they surely come!!!i guess payphone will not be that obsolete and may have some upgrade features just to compete with the mobile phones...we can still use them since mobile phones can be low bat at times...if that happens then payphones are of great help..

Well you know why they use bluetooth, because a lot of people from one country where cell phones are cheap that they can get a new one each year told them that talking directly into a cell phone causes cancer and not just ordinary cancer, brain cancer. So do not think these people using bluetooth are crazy. I bet they would love to pick up the cellphone and talk into it directly, but when there is a chance of getting cancer or radiation sickness, they will not take a chance.

Society works on a pendumlum. Right now it's swinging out of control with the constant influx of new technologies and old ones being reinvented. But pay phones, though they may reduce in numbers will never disappear. Cell phones 'die' and now that we are so addicted to talking to 'ourselves' in public, a pay phone will do in a pinch! LOL

In my city they are already obsolete. I live outside out of a major city, Atlanta GA and 25 minutes from the busiest airports Hartsfield but in my city that equates to 11 square miles and 4200 people I have never seen a payphone!

Times are changing. Never mind pay phones, there will come a time we won't even need to leave the house.
And people have always camped out in payphones, lol. Did you ever see "adventures in babysitting", now called "a night on the town".

I think they already are becoming that way. I was at O'hare recently and it took me forever to find one and one is all there was. I won't forget my cell ever again. LOL

Yes, it's very strange to see someone walking around talking aloud with nobody at their side!
Sadly, pay phones are a thing of the past. I rarely see them anymore but people still used them.
I think it's rude, though, to walk around talking on the phone where everyone can hear your conversation. Especially in a public place like a restaurant.

I have had to use a pay phone on several occasions.
In the airport- Stupid cellphone company took my money for roaming minutes and just put it in some account that did not give me roaming in Detroit...so I had to use the pay phone to call my boyfriend
At home- I had never met my father, and I was unsure if I was calling the right numbers, or whether I wanted him to have mine or not. So, back to the pay phone.

Unfortunately, I think they will go extinct and soon. They almost already are. I found that out the hard way. I was having problems with my cell phone. I was supposed to be picking my daughter up and needed directions. I couldn't call out on my cell phone, so I was trying to find a pay phone to call my brother and have him look up the directions on the internet. I went to several gas stations and convenient stores in search of one. Some didn't have one and others had them but they weren't working. Since they aren't used much, the phone company doesn't service them too often. I was in a panic and felt so all alone in the world. It was like some kind of wierd nightmare. I finally found one that was operational and got to my daughter on time. But it was a disturbing experience.

LOL! How true, when the earpieces first came out, I always thought people were walking around talking to themselves.
I haven't even noticed any payphones around where I live. I believe they will be gone altogether soon. With almost everyone having cell phones there really isn't much need for them, they are just another object to be destroyed by trouble-makers.
