Hello there,
I don't know if your son is into anything in particular, you know, like SpongeBob SquarePants or Cars, or Pokemon, Spiderman, etc.; but there is a great website where you can buy all the plates, partyware, favors, balloons, decorations, cake supplies, etc. and it is
http://www.birthdayexpress.com
Birthday Express has the cutest theme stuff online. You should go there and check it out. My daughter was invited to a classmate's birthday party and it was Batman and Superman theme. I mean the cake, the balloons, the plates and cups, the napkins, the party favors, and the gift bags themselves all were decorated with Superman or Batman or both together. And I am pretty sure that this place is where she got all of this stuff.
Good luck with this! I am going to look into it myself for my next child's birthday. I hope your son has a wonderful birthday!!
Have a great day and happy myLotting!

try oriental trading co. They have an online store with tons of theme ideas for kids parties.
Some ideas I have used with my daughter were:
dalmatians (3rd b-day)
Alice in wonderland (4th)
Luau
webkinz
harry potter
60's peace and love
my little pony-hello kitty
Hope that helps!

I think it would be hard to plan a party for kids from 4-12 yrs old.
I agree that oriental trading has great ideas for kids parties. My daughter just turned 8 and I bought a ton of stuff from Oriental Trading and we had a pirate party. They had pink pirate bags filled already with goodies for the goodie bags. We had a pinate too. We then did girl things.
For my boys, we use to go bowling for their parties. Everyone loves bowling, kids of all ages.

I rented a moon bouncer for my kids bday. It was a huge hit.
They came out and set it up and then returned to pick it up so it was hassel free. If it is a warm day you could always have water games- slip & slides, water balloons, anything to keep them cool. I also love making little party favors, nothing expensive just put a few little goodies in some party bags. Anything to keep them busy usually works

Candies! Balloons! those are the things that kids love. or make it a movie theme. Make it a kung fu panda birthday. you can have games that involve noodles!
