House flies and black pepper...

I just learned that to get rid of flies in your house
you set out a saucer with some black pepper in it.
I always have flies in my house because I leave the back door open for
the 16 year old dog to come and go and because I live in farm country.
I do use the fly stickers at night then throw them out in the morning
but last night I put some black pepper in a saucer, set it on top of my refrig
where the cats wouldn't get into it and this morning no flies to be seen. There was
at least 3 or 4 flying around when I went off to bed. Try it!
What do you think of using natural things when possible.

Hi Raydene, Boy am I pleased you posted this one as this year for some reason myself and my neighbour seem to be inundated with flies and we were both saying that we just didn't know what to do to get rid of them I have my bug zapper which is great fun and good exercise but I really haven' the time or the energy to be chasing them around. Thank you so much I'm on my way to my cupboard to get the black pepper out after this post. Ellie :D

I do use natural things when possible. For instance I used to spray white vinegar to disrupt ants. I have not heard of black pepper for flies. I have been using a very cheap version of Listerine original in a spray bottle. My brother says it repels mosquitoes, snopes says it does not. I think the actual mechanism is that it block the carbon dioxide we give off that causes them to find us and bite us. I also leave my back door open for pets. I have found that spraying the Listerine repels flies, chases ants off the counter, and has a fresh smell. One of its active ingredients is thymol, which I think is oil of thyme, if I am not mistaken. I will put it in homemade baby wipes as well. It is harmless, makes me feel fresh and seems to work to repel insects. It is very clean feeling.

Raydene, does that seriously work? I have never heard of it before . I will have to break out the black pepper . There are cattle and horses here where i live, even in town so you know the flies are thick . We have the fly strips as well but they dont catch all the little buggers.
I would rather use something natural that all the poisons and things we have now. Thanks for the great idea hun!!!

Does that work for mosquitos and no-see-ems as well. I seem to have them in my house at night, they love the computer screen and I squish them and then the next day I have to clean up the bodies. Ick.

That sounds like a really good idea. i ahvent heard that before but I could try it.
I get one or two in here from time to time. They drive the dog nuts he's always snapping at them and such. I wonder what the theory is with this? It sounds like an interesting idea. I hate those sticky fly traps and things like that.

Well I'm definitely going to try this too! Does it work outside to keep them off your patio too?
Does it kill them? or does it just repel them?
MOSQUITO TIP: Marigolds are a natural repellent. Last year I planted a bunch and kept them in pots on our patio. Works like a charm. Everyone says they stink. But I don't think so. I don't think they had much of a smell at all. And we didn't get any more bees than we normally get. (Marigolds are known to attract them).
This year unfortunately I only got 1 plant to live. I'm going to have to break down and by some already blooming from the store!

What a great tip. Thanks. I'm usually bothered more with mosquitoes than flies, but for some reason this year I've got one or two at a time that just drive me nuts! I'll definitely have to try that. I beats spraying raid all over the place.

That I must say that is a new one for catching fly's I never heard of that home remedy befor. I basically don't need anything for I have my cat he will go after all those kinds of things from spiders, flies, wasps, mosquitetos, any kind of bug and he he will chase them around the place til he catchs them. My part in all that is to vacumme them up afterwards which I don't mind for that's easy it's killikng them I hate doing that's his job lol.

I have always preferred using natural products instead of chemicals so I'll have to give that a try. We live in the country, too, and use our sliding glass patio door the most, which lets lots of bugs in every time it's opened.

I never heard of that but I will try it because at my parents house when the kids are over they walk in and out constantly leaving the door open and then there is always a fly in the house. But as for using natural things I try home remedies and natural things first to get rid of something before going out and buying some brand that usually never works for all the money spent.
Thanks for the tip.

That's an interesting idea. I will have to try tha, Funny, but our dog lied to be 16 too. I hope yours is still healthy at that ripe old age.
I've had a couple of prolems with flys following me into the apartment uilding rom outside, but by the time I've walked down the hall and down the stairs, they've usually given up on me, and hae left me alone.

Hi raydene,
Thanks for this information..We have this problem too and most of the time I am following them and trying to hit them...LOL!
But, we also open our back door during day time so we will have fresh air and to save electricity too!

Thanks for the tip. I will have to try this out. We live in the country and have 4 kids that like to run in and out. The flies are really bothersome and don't know how to stay away from our televisions and computers. I will try this out and see how it does. I think it is great to use natural things whenever possible. I just wish I could find something that would work for roaches. I can't seem to get rid of them. I have tried everything. Sprays work for a while, but they just seem to come back. If anyone knows of anything, let me know. I am willing to try anything.
