Hi lotters ladies here. My niece will be attending JS Prom this year and we are starting to hunt for a Prom Dress, Maybe a long gown..or a cocktail style. Any dress shops could recommend? Thanks!

adjhoice- good luck! I have two daughters who I guided through multiple proms. I shopped at a store with a large selection of gowns for teenagers. Most of their gowns came from "Dillard's". You can also look in "Ross", a store that sells clothing from overstock in other stores. I don't know if you have those stores where you live. You can also find gowns in bridal shops, as they carry bridesmaid gowns. If you buy a gown off the rack, it might be a savings. One more thing - I never paid full price for a gown. I've been reading about how teens are cutting costs when it comes to prom time, because our economy is failing. They suggested looking for resale shops, sometimes you can find a nice gown there. Another suggestion was to check around for older sisters gowns, or maybe wear someone else's gown from a previous prom. The shoes sometimes ended up costing more than the dress. That drove all of us to distraction. I'm glad those days are behind me. Take your time and have fun.

Sorry I have to let you down on this one. I don't know of any place that rents gowns. It's a good idea though, maybe it will catch on. You'll find a dress somewhere, it takes time, that's all. Keep looking. I wish the links had helped you. You checked your phone book for likely places, yes? Stay focused and try to enjoy the process. I remember years when my daughters and I cried in frustration and disappointment, but we always found a gown we could afford. I wish I had something more than encouragement to offer you.

I get involved with this every year, since I teach high school seniors. What most of the girls do is track down something they like in fashion magazines, adjust the photo to include whatever they wish, and bring it to a seamstress. Not only are they able to get a customized look; they generally spend less than they would have in the stores.

It usually works very well If the kids are really a couple, soric makes the boys tie or vest or cummerbund. Good luck, and have fun!
