A lump in the eye and how can you get rid of it?

My hubby has had a sty or what looks like a lump in his left eye for a few weeks now and it seems to be getting bigger and not going away. He says it doesn't hurt when he touches it so not sure whether it's an actual sty or something else. He talked to someone at a pharmacy and they said it will eventually go away. It hasn't and I've asked he see a eye specialist but he never got around to seeing one before he left this morning. Has anyone had anything similar happen to them? What did you do to treat it? Thanks in advance for the advice.

Hello maddysmommy, I guess it will just go away when treated with proper ointment or cream! I have tried this before but I just wait until it vanished..I was in College that time! SO, maybe you can check for any cream or ointment that might help! Then, it's also better to use sunglasses when going out!

Hi checapricorn. He's had it for more than a week now and have noticed it's gotten a little bigger. I told him to buy some antibiotic eye drops or ointment to apply on the outside of the eyelid to see if that will help. He's also applying the heat treatment so we shall see if it goes away in a few days. Thanks for your comment and hope all is well with you.

Well I have a sty on my eye and it can be annoying when it acts up but it doesnt hurt me and there is nothing that i can do to make it go away. Lucky for me its small and usually doesnt flare up. But when it does it gets bigger and looks funny. I never went to a doctor as it doesnt bother me much and has never hurt.

Hi Minnie. It seems to be bothering him at the moment and the fact that its causing his eye to blur a bit, I think it could be more than just a sty.

If he has had it a week and it isn't going a way (the last time i had one it was just 2-3 days before it started to shrink), I would go to the Dr. He may have something worse - like an ulcer - that can permanently damage his vision.

A warm as you can stand wet cloth over it. That's exactly what a specialist will tell you to do. Don't waste your money.

hello friend,i am so sorry to hear that.in fact,I suggest you should go to a good hospital for the eye checking firstly.Thi is more important.Because after checking, we can know what happened actually. My mother had a sty in her right eye one year before, after 3 months injection on her eye, finally she is okay now..I think it is not a big problem, don't worry.Just check the eye and fllow the doctor's instruction,i think your hubby will get well soon. have a good day

Thanks successlog for your response. If it hasn't gone away after the heat treament and applying an antibiotic eye drop or cream then will definitely get it checked out. Thanks again.

A sty usually does not last for more than a week so he might want to get that checked out as you said at the eye doctor. However if you still think it is a sty, what you can do is keep a warm cloth compress (I usually just microwave a wet washcloth) firmly pressed on the affected eye. After a few days of periodically using the warm compress the eye should be back to normal

Hi boerema. I'm beginning to think it's more than just a sty because he's had it longer than a week and it seems to have grown a little bit. It feels like a hard lump that doesn't hurt when he touches or presses down on it. He is away at the moment but I have suggested he buy some antibiotic eye drops or cream to apply on the eyelid and also apply the heat treatment. We shall see how he does in a couple of days. Thanks for the advice and welcome to Mylot.

Yea it sounded like a sty up until you said it was a hard lump. I have had many stys before and all of them have been just puffy and swolen (Usually always closest to the nose where people normally rub their eyes). Definently check with an eye doctor

Hi maddysmommy I know that it takes a long time for them to go but if he is that worried he should go to the Doctor though I have never suffered with anything like that so I would not know what to suggest

HUGS Hi Gabs :) How are you doing? I'll catch up with your discussions soon. I've been away for a while with family visiting and spending time with my son during the summer holidays. As for the lump on his eyelid, I think it's more than just a sty. It has been more than two weeks now and it's still there, but seems to have grown a bit. I've sent him information via email on how to start treating it and if it's still there when he returns, will definitely get it checked out. Thanks Gabs.

When my daughter had a sty what got it to go away quicker was warm compresses. Just take a washrag and soak it in warm water for a few minutes, then place it on the sty for a while every night. This gets the sty to come to a head (its like a big pimple) and eventually burst. What you do need to look out for is that once it leaves, if it comes back in the same place. If this happens, you may need to see the ophthalmologist for a prescription. I forget exactly what this condition is called, but it means that its not between the eyelashes like most sty's, it's in the membrane under the eyelid. Those can be hard to get rid of permanently if not caught early on. But the only way to tell is if you get rid of the first one, and it comes back in the same place. That's what happened to my daughter.

Thanks drkn. This is the first time I have noticed a sty on his eyelid. I had him apply a warm washcloth to his eyelid yesterday and to continue doing it several times a day for the next few days. He's in Guatemala at the moment. P1kefish mentioned the term meibomian cyst (Chalazion) and I think that is what he has. I've emailed him the information as well. If it hasn't gone away when he returns in four weeks, then we will definitely see someone about it. Thanks for your response.

Sounds like it might be a meibomian cyst. Nothing to worry about. It's a collection of debris following an eye infection. It can be operated on or will probably clear up in about 3 months. If in doubt see your doctor. Better safe than sorry.

If it is a stye then it should have or had an yellow spot on it where the pus is, as a stye is an infection of the glands, sometimes though a stye can turn into a cyst, either way if it is getting bigger then he should be seen as a sty needs to be drained. I used to get styes quite a lot when I was younger and putting a warm compress on it can help to draw it to a head much quicker so that the pus comes out, just do it four times a day. But other than that if it keeps growing or does not come to a head then I would take him to be seen.

I keep telling him that too and he just shrugs his shoulders. He's in Guatemala at the moment and then goes onto Belize. He won't be returning till August 19th but I have sent him some information I found online - if he gets an antibiotic eye drop or cream, that should help hopefully as well as applying a warm cloth on the lump. If it hasn't gone away when he returns, we will see an eye doctor. Thanks Hatley.

That's something you should see a doctor about. I once had something similar, not a lump, but similar and it was an infection and its very necessary to take medicine for that. I would definitely recommend you get the guy to a doctor. You just never know.

Will definitely get him to see one when he returns from overseas. He is stubborn as a mule and I tried to get him to see one before he left but that never happened. Fingers crossed it doesn't get worse and it can be treated with antibiotic eye drops or a cream. Thanks bluepatch.

I had these problesm twice now and they recur again now and then and my observation is that they usually tend to go away after three or four days. So I do not really worry about it. i never consulted a doctor for it, but sure took medicines. They worked and I have gotten rid of that problem. I also observed that the portion near the swell would hurt if I tried to touch it. Maybe you should ask your hubby to get it checked. If it gets serious, it's something that would go bad. bourne

Thanks bourne. He is applying a heat treatment to the eyelid and if that doesn't work within a few days then he is going to get some antibiotic eye drops and or cream to help. If it's still an issue when he returns in four weeks, then we will definitely get it checked out.

I've had sty's before, take a warm or hot washcloth and put it over his eye. it will make the swelling go down, and it will go away. it might take a few times for it to work.

you're welcome, if it is a cyst then it will come to head when you apply heat and bust on it's own.

I have been told of some folk remedies which might be out of place in this modern world. They say placing some of your own urine on the infected eye helps to kill the bacteria infecting it. Urine is also used to control infestation of red mights on plants. Cheers!!

I've had a similar problem but suggest that he sees the doctor simply because it could be something different from what i had. mine wasn't serious and was told to apply some sort of blue ink(iodine..maybe)not sure! was ages ago.
