i downloaded itunes for nothing?!?!?!?

so i have just downloaded itunes...
thinking that i am able to put in new songs....
but after i have downloaded it i realise that it will sync the ipod to the computer...
and i have new songs in the computer, but i dont have the old ones....
so help me!!!
is it true that the ipod will delete all the songs that the computer does not have???!?!?!
if that is so i think i will just buy a cheaper, easier mp3....

You can stop it doing this. I forget the exact settings, but if you have a look under the preferences in iTunes, you can set it not synch, or synch 'manually', or some combination thereof. It saves the settings to your iPod also, so if you hook it up to another computer, it remembers you don't want to sync.
You can also, well, not use iTunes. Winamp will happily pull up anything on your iPod and allow you to move stuff back and forth. I imagine other media players will too.
