Looking for tips/advice for a new guitar player

I had my guitar sitting in my closet for over a year and finally decided to pick it up and start playing after a long period of procrastination. When I got my guitar I also got this computer program that helps teach you how to play guitar and it has been helping quite a bit. I would love to hear any tips or advice on what I should focus on in the beginning and anything I should do to help improve my skill.
